Social Inequality and Intolerance of others In to Kill a Mocking Bird Social inequality and the intolerance of others can cause people to treat others terribly. When individuals do not accept that others are equal to them, even those who have not done anything wrong may be punished. In the novel, it demonstrates how each character treat each other. Discrimination is one of the biggest factors that occur in the story as members of Maycomb treat black people as if they are not equal which is wrong. We not only get to read about Tom Robinson's trial, but also in the way that Jem, Scout and the townspeople are narrow-minded of Boo Radley and the townspeople treat him poorly as Atticus is trying to support fairness. Intolerance as a result is a great theme in the novel and one that is worthy of investigating more. The inequality of others causes really tells the story in this book.
