In school, it is important to be aware of our own unconscious bias and strive to create an inclusive space for everyone in the school community. We can do this by teaching social justice and anti-bias curriculum, as well as providing ways for students to discuss their own experiences with bias and prejudice. By recognizing the potential for unconscious bias and by teaching students about it, we can create a school environment that values everyone’s unique identities and respects all individuals.Unconscious biases can play out in everyday interactions, both at work and at home; they can affect individual attitudes and behaviors, and even workplace policies and organizational culture. To recognize unconscious bias, it is important to become aware of the underlying stereotypes that you may have towards different groups of people and be open to questioning your own beliefs. To promote social justice and anti- bias language, individuals must take the time to self- reflect on language that is used in their day-to-day conversations, both internally and externally. We must all commit to language that is respectful and mindful in order to create a more inclusive environment for everyone. It is also important to recognize when language reflects conscious or unconscious bias towards certain groups of people, and be willing to learn about different perspectives so we can become better advocates for social justice.
