Forbidden City Essay and Analysis There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of our desires. ~ Nelson Mandela In the novel “Forbidden City” Alex a main character in the story, creates social justice by revealing the events to the outside, and creating allies that support him. The author William.E.Bell depicts creating social justice themes in creating allies that will fight for your cause, and friends that will help you through difficult times. Through the support of his friends Alex is able to sneak tapes of the events that happened in Tiananmen Square to the rest of the world. Then from the pain he falls unconscious. When he awakens he is welcome to a rural home on a bed where he is safe. He soon meets the students who saved him. “The student switched to English. “How you are feeling?” After some introductions, Alex realizes he was rescued by the rag team of students and without them he would have most likely either be captured and jailed or shot dead. He quickly befriends them and with them. Of all possessions a friend is the most precious. ~ Herodotus When Alex’s leg is injured, the team of students figures out a plan to get Alex to the embassy and more importantly his father. Alex realizes that they’re plan is illegal, and not all the students may survive through the ordeal. He resists and fights back against their suggestion, but the thought occurred to him that he has no other option or way to get back to Canada. “We have a plan,” Xin Hua went on. “I will take you to the Canada Embassy. Xiao Nie says foreigners are going to their embassies and then outside.” Without a struggle, there can be no progress. ~ Frederick
