The Social Media Controversy In recent discussions of social media and writing, a controversial issue has been whether social media effects your writing or it makes it better. On one hand, Andrew Simmons argues that social media helps people write. From this perspective, Simmons says that with the introduction of social media, his students have been able to write more freely about feelings more easily with their friends not ridiculing them; on the other hand however, others argue that social media “wrecks” writing. In the words of Ruth Campbell, one of the views main proponents, “The prevalence of Facebook, Twitter and texting has all but obliterated punctuation, capitalization and apostrophes in schools, threatening the future of formal writing, …show more content…

One can see bot of these reasons in Campbell’s essay “OMG: Social Media May Wreck Your Kid’s Writing”. In support of the first she writes “‘students are more likely to commit certain grammatical errors because they use the conventions of texting, tweeting and Facebooking in their formal academic essays. Occasionally, I see actual 'text language,' like using the letter 'u' instead of the word ‘you,’’ Sentell wrote” (Campbell 9). This idea makes sense because it recognizes the issue of that students won’t care if they are using correct punctuation, etc. because of auto-correct and other grammar fixing applications. Another piece of evidence that supports the belief that social media ruins people’s writing is an the Pew study, many students are careless. Campbell writes “46 percent said these tools make students more likely to ‘write too fast and be careless’” (Campbell 23). One can see the truth of this by looking at “OMG:Social Media May Wreck Your Kid’s Writing.” Though advocates of this view, including this author, may concede that it can help kids writing, she might also reply that it hinders more often than
