The United States of America is a historical figure full of success. However, it has also been a walking controversy. It is a nation funded on immigration, yet they do not welcome refugees. A country tired of tyranny from King George III, to increasingly controlling its citizens. This might stem from America’s main problem: material wealth. Consumerism is a dark and crippling fixation that American has unfortunately no dealt with. Western civilization’s hunger for material wealth has caused a decrease in the overall happiness and well-being of people. Social media has become an extreme part of people’s lives. He pointed out that media affects the culture’s intellect and social concerns, which is very true. Today Social media has decided what we should pay attention to. The topics that are “trending” is what people pay attention to, otherwise we ignore them. When it comes to intellect, it also dictates our language and character. Social media has changed the way younger people speak. They tend to shorten words and give word new meanings. For example, we use lol to refer to something being funny. While the word ‘salty’ has been given the meaning to when a person is mad or upset. Also, businesses have used social media to advertise their goods and services. We are bombarded with objects that we do not have; when we see friends and family members with those products, we feel left out. We get the urge to buy these products. Neil Postman commented that we communicate more with the devices we create more than God, nature, and other human beings. Today, we tend to look at our phones when doing most things. When we walk, eat, in the bathroom, during free time, school, and even driving. If you go to a restaurant, people do not interact as much as they use to. They tend to use their phone and social media while there is a person less than a foot away. A cellphone’s function was to make communication easier by being able to call someone and contact them instantly. Now, we have turned this into something bigger than it is.
