On August 1, 2003, the social media frenzy in young teenagers all took flight. Myspace was a place for kids to interact with friends, or even complete strangers, to form relationships. By 2006, Myspace had grown to the largest social media website in the world, but was soon passed over by Facebook in 2008. These websites are effecting people of all ages, all over the United States. Social media has made us disconnected, avoid life situations, and addicted to other people’s updates.
We disconnect ourselves from the real world to avoid conversation, and often even to avoid conflict. Most people would rather text and wait a given amount of time than pick up the phone to make a phone call. Its not just face to face contact anymore, it’s anything that involves being connected with people in real time. We are so disconnected from the real world that we base our life off of the conversations that are sparking up from text message that are completely emotionless and perfected.

A study shows that 90% of kids are involved in online activities by the time they reach the third grade. What kind of habits do you think this is forming at such a young age? Addictive habits aren’t only associated with drugs anymore, but also include texting, snap chat, Twitter, and really anything that is “needed” to get through the day. Teenagers will literally fiend if they aren’t seeing all of the one hundred second snap stories and someone constant status updates on their current break up.
