For example episode 11 when a guy named Jason Robert physically attacks a girl named Megan in front of an audience , he behavior is considered deviance because he harms another person. Attacking another person and stalking is prime example that he is different from most people. Another example is episode season 15 episode 10 when detective Benson attacked and kidnapped by a murder. This broke into her apartment and held her captive for four days where he would tie her up and make her watch as he did unspeakable things to another. His behavior would be considered as deviance because what he does is unsocial and it violates what is considered normal in today’s society.
Deviance Sociologists general defines deviance as “an action that is perceived as violating a society’s or groups cultural norm”. Deviance can be perceived in many different ways. Vegetarians and Muslims are both groups that do not consume meat. Although these groups are not breaking the law. Their behavior is different than what is accepted to be normal.
The Story “The Man Who Knew Belle Starr” written by Richard Bausch has two main themes which are deviance and transgression. Deviance, according to Debra Marshall, is behavior that violates standards or expectations. She also mentions Robert K. Merton’s deviance typology. The chart displays five categories which are conformity, innovation, ritualism, retreatism and rebellion. According to Jenks’ “Whither Transgression?”, To transgress is to go beyond the bounds or limits set by a commandment or law or convention, it is to violate or infringe.
I totally agree with your statement Mikayla. According to research, deviance a violation of social norms that define appropriate behavior under a particular set of circumstances, but not all deviance is a criminal act. I believe that many individuals; especially females’ behavior is their conformity to social norms. There are some individuals who view offending as a type of behavior that is similar in many respects to other types of antisocial behavior. It is possible that all these acts can slowly change and help people understand, that there is more to life, other the ways they have been taught or all that they may
Deviance is described as a violation of culture norms. In Jonestown as a Perverse Utopian they described it as a cult. There are cults all round the world however, it is not a norm to be in on or know of one personally. On December 8th, due to their utopian cult there was a mass suicide of 911 people. The leader believed that for many years the “followers needed” to be poisoned with opium and then cyanide.
For our group and our shared love of food we figured that a social norm that had something to do with that would be perfect for us. We decided that the norm to drive through a drive thru needed to be tested. Why should cars be the only ones with the fast access to fast food at their convenience? We believed that people should be able to walk through the drive thrus if it is more convenient for them.
For my second experiential learning assignment, I decided to break a social norm while going out to eat with my family at a restaurant: granted this is something I have a habit of doing but the reaction I got from my dining mates was particularly interesting this time. To give a little bit of background of the setting I was in at the time, I was with my mother, younger brother, and my mother’s friend at a restaurant in DC for my birthday dinner. The restaurant was crowded, but not many people were paying attention to what we were doing. The behavior I decided to break was dipping my fingers in the container caramel was in and then proceeded lick my fingers after doing so. I choose to break this social norm because one, the caramel sauce was really good, and two I was testing to see if my mother would say anything: normally on my birthday she lets me get away with
Reading Response Deviance is the term that is coined for someone doing anything outside the norms of social standards. Straying from the social norms is not necessarily a bad thing, for instance a woman doing jobs that. in society are considered a man's job, and vise versa, a man that stays at home to support his kids would get strange looks from people. When people do what's not within the social norms there is usually some sort of negative reaction. whether it be jail time or nasty looks from people on the streets.
Deviance is the violation of norms. This could be as small as a speeding ticket or as serious as a murder. Sociologist Howard S. Becker described deviance like this: “It is not the act itself, but the reactions to the act, the make something deviant (pg. 162).” Deviance lead se to the three theoretical approaches (symbolic interactionism, functionalism, and conflict theory). Symbolic Interactionism is the first theoretical approach.
Deviance Within a Society In speaking of deviance in society in a sociological perspective, two theorists that come to mind are Robert Merton and Emilie Durkheim. In chapter IV of “Social Theory and Social Structure” by Robert Merton, he speaks of how deviance is formed in society which can lead to anomie. In “The Rules of Sociological Method” by Emilie Durkheim, he speaks about the function of crime in a society. These two theorists share similar views regarding the social structure however their views differ regarding the function of deviance.
According to Hunt and Colandar (2011), a word deviant refers to when an individual’s actions contradict with society’s norms. For instance, majority peoples followed norms because society expect individual to behave in morally tolerate with each other. Those failing to conform the norms noted as deviant. In a social context, the task of the society is to blind the action of the social community together. Once failing to act them to the society’s reaction that seem as deviant.
Socio-biologists explain deviance by looking for answers within the individual and they assume that genetic tendencies lead people to deviances. Among their explanations were these three theories: (1)Intelligence, where low intelligence leads to crime, (2) the "XYY" theory , where an extra Y chromosome in males leads to crime, (3) body type where people with "squarish, muscular" bodies are more likely to commit street crime. Cesare Lombroso was a criminologist who believed that being a criminal was inherited. From this belief, he developed a theory of deviance in which a person’s physical structure shows whether or not an individual is a "born criminal." Lombroso argued that criminals were throwbacks of a previous and more pre-historic form of man.
Before embarking on this study, I thought we were not entirely constrained by social norms, and if confident enough, we could be capable of breaking any norm. However, after studying the physical strain that breaking a social norm had caused others and realizing I experienced the same physical strain, I recognized that our society is constructed of social norms that are detrimental to break. I think this experience has taught me to be sensitive to the insecurities of others, and not to assume I know the reason behind someone 's action. A fashion trend of wearing small neck scarfs has emerged among a hipster group, and it hasn 't become a mainstream fashion yet.
Many groups or cultures have different views on what is considered deviant.
Social Norms Society is full of social norms that people tend to obey, especially while in the public, judgemental eye. Dressing appropriately, using an “indoor voice” while indoors, and keeping out of other’s personal space are just some of the several norms that people in the United States nonconsciously follow. If someone were to violate these unspoken rules of society, there is usually backlash or disapproval to the violated norm. While in public, there is usually music that is being played. Take a mall for example.
