Social Realities and Race Project Fetishization of Asian Women Kaitlyn Toda SOC 20H: Intro to Race and Ethnicity Honors Professor Karla Hernandez June 7, 2024 Introduction A widespread problem that has an impact on the lives of many members of this racial/ethnic minority group is the fetishization of Asian women. The fetishization of Asian women is seen in the media and in real life, taking on many different forms such as everyday interactions that disrespect Asian women based on these damaging clichés as well as media portrayals that reduce them to exotic and submissive stereotypes. Not just socially, but economically, Asian women are objectified and sexualized in the media in order to keep them in a subordinate position (Buckler 2008). Conflict theory contributes to broadening patterns of racism and sexism regarding Asian women being marginalized and commodified. Symbolic Interactionism: Symbolic interactionism is a sociological framework focusing on how people act based on meanings symbols previously held for them. It deals with the meanings and interpretations of said symbols, but more importantly how people and individuals attach to them. The fetishization of Asian women can be explained by symbolic interactionism. Very often, Asian women are portrayed as submissive and hypersexualized, not just in film but in various social contexts. This creates a set of symbolic meanings that external people internalize and act upon. Symbolic interactionism shows how these symbols and their meanings perpetuate the marginalization and objectification of Asian women. Intersectionality: Intersectionality examines how social identities all intersect and create unique experiences for discrimination, and the other side of discrimination: privilege. Social identities
