The Jews were forced to do all types of things such as, burn bodies, clean, and so much more. Working was their way to survive the camp, but most people didn’t make it until the end, when the Americans saved the ones who were still alive.
Weisell explains what life was like in a concentration camp; “ Hunger- thirst- fear- transport- selection- fire- chimney: these words all have intrinsic meaning, but in those times they meant something else (Weisellix).” The Jews were treated not as humans because they were not viewed as such in the eyes of the Nazi’s.
Also the SS men made all the prisoners look the same so they could all feel like there was no place for them. Also the SS men’s form of dehumanization was abuse and the SS men were hurting the prisoners in many violent ways including, whipping , hitting, blows to the head, barley feeding them, forcing them to get tattoos of numbers on their arms that they have to live with forever, and much more. The prisoners had to live with these scars and memories for the rest of their lives and always have a memory of what it was like in the holocaust always in the back of their mind. The Nazi’s set up workshops, where the older jews would go and make products for the german war effort. Since they had more work, they were usually more tired then the children. They also had to face a chance of death, if they happened to mess up with something at the workshop. Many became smugglers, mostly the women. They would bring in food, illegally, to feed their children.
Schindler’s List displays this by showing how the Jews were sent to forced labour camps such as the Plaszow. When they arrived to these labour and concentration camps, they were separated by gender as told “men to the left, women to the right”, this separated families causing more effective discomfort to the Jews. Many events led to this crisis and they all included the persecution of the Jewish people.
They were put into camps in the middle of nowhere. Their so-called “house” was poorly built, they had very thin walls, the house always leaked whenever it rained, they had to make their own furniture, the food wasn’t very good, and there was a fence keeping them in. Many people died trying to get out of the camps. Many innocent people were taken into these camps, a lot were even arrested.

Nevertheless, living conditions in a concentration camp were extremely harsh, since up to 700 people had to live in a barrack; they were expected to either sleep on the floor or a concrete base covered with a straw mattress (Schacht and Thyssen). Not only did these Jews have to face poor living conditions, yet they were expected to work a minimum of eleven hours. If they didn’t meet the Nazis’ criteria, you were “subjected to barbaric medical experiments or killed by guns or gas chambers” (Anne Frank - Diary, Biography & Facts). The reasoning as to why the Jews were to face these hardships was because of Adolf Hitler’s malicious hatred.
At camp they would work untill the Nazi’s thought it was time to kill them. During 1933 the Nazis started to establish a network of camps. They were concentration camps due to the fact that they were used to concentrate enemies and certain groups of people in one place all together. Not one was better than the other for the Jews though, they all were gonna eventually gonna get killed by either sickness or the Nazi’s.
