During the time both were presidents, the United States was in a crisis known as the Great Depression which lasted from the early 1930s to the early 1940s, ending during World War II. The government took a big stand during the Great Depression to help the people and make America a great place to live again. It was time for government to step in and help all the people that needed resources from the government. The government created programs to bring relief,recovery and reform to the country. Without any guidance from the government to the people the country would have folded completely. The unemployment sky rocketed which caused the government to have no choice but to step in.
During the Great Depression there was great skepticism of the role that the government should play in the economy. Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover were two political leaders, among many, who went head to head in trying to justify their opinions related to government involvement economically. Hoover critiqued Roosevelt’s push towards a more positive government because he believed that freedom could only be accomplished with less government intervention—less rules—but what he failed to see was that the government was not limiting peoples freedom, it was protecting it. Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Second Bill of Rights aimed for a new foundation of security and equality that could be achieved despite someone’s race or class.
Progressive reform was a movement, dominated by the working middle class, in hopes of eliminating corruption in American Government. During the 1890s to 1920s, it was clear to see that people were being mistreated and abused by large corporations known as trusts. These businesses were manipulating prices, and even buying out competition in order to guarantee maximum profit, which put the consumers at the mercy of the company. It was important for Progressivists to target and eliminate these businesses and their bosses in order to effectively distribute money to the population; at this time, about three fourths of the population were classified as poor. Because of the nature of the depression, the people’s personal responsibility were little to blame. As Roosevelt put it, when private facilities cannot provide jobs for the public, it is the government’s role to provide relief. This marked a three term cycle between aiding the working class, and emerging social programs, that inherently strengthened the powers of the federal government. Altogether, this changed the people's interaction with government from being fairly limited before the twentieth century, to federal government control over monetary policies and workforce standards, which enacted long lasting changes in the upcoming form of government (Biles 3).
The Progressive Era took place in 1890 to 1920. The Progressive Era started as a social movement and started to grow into a political movement. They also did not believe in social Darwinism. They believed that the worlds problems that society faced "(poverty, violence, greed, racism, class warfare)" could be prevented by having safe environments to live in, having a great education, and an efficient place to work. The "Progressives" usually lived in the big cities.

This caused for an increase in disagreements about the progressive reform. The ideas that the three historians had in the readings were quite interesting and they will cause people to rethink who the progressives really were. Joseph Huthmacher presented the idea in Urban Liberalism and the Act of Reform that people of the workforce that demanded for workmen’s compensation and wage laws were behind progressivism.
There was many successes and failures during the Progressive Era, however to me the most important success was the women suffrage and the biggest failure was child labor. Women suffrage was a success because it allowed women to vote. For instance, women were not listen to during this time this in fact anger the women. However, after fighting for so long woman could vote and give their opinion. Women suffrage was also a success because ever since then women have become consider to making decisions such as choosing the next president.

The Progressive Era lasted from the 1890’s to the early 1920’s. It was centralized around socialism and political reform. One of the major changes that took place during this era, was the labor legislation. Many workers were working long shifts, for several days straight, making their work life just about unbearable, and unworkable conditions. The job environment had become to where it was unsafe, unsanitary, and unregulated conditions for very low wages.
Throughout our education careers, we should have learned the importance of both sides of the Constitution debate. However, many have only seen the winning side (Federalist) then the opposing side (Anti-federalist's). The main arguments that arose during the debate concerning the United States Constitution was that the Anti-federalist believed the constitution threatened liberties, failed to protect individuals rights, threatened the sovereignty of the states, and gave to much power to the federal government. Most of the individuals on the opposing side was farmers and workers, which was mainly against anything dealing with a strong national government. They believed that the Bill of Rights would prevent individuals rights from being taken.
During the Progressive Era, progressives called for reforms in many aspects of life, and the political reform was one of them. Progressives assumed the political needed fixing because the political parties used the old political machines to run their elections and control the whole process of those. In addition, the reformers claimed that a reform would help pass and exercise good laws, while get rid of the outdated ones. Therefore, the progressives initiated the political reforms. In responded to the pressure from the public, the state legislatures required the political parties to use a direct primary to choose the person who was getting elected.
The rise of Socialism, which began in the 1800s, has changed and influenced a number of institutions; which have been affected in a very negative manner. Economies, family structure, education, and politics are just a few that have been negatively affected. Socialism has never been a positive answer for issues in this world. It causes whole economies to collapse and families to break down.
Reform movements of the Progressive Era changed the importance of America in every other aspect of life. Starting from birth control reforms to government reform and many others who’d brought a new wave of prosperity in this country. I would like to share my views about the Educational reforms of progressive era, because the progressives of that time worked really hard to reform and rejuvenate the school, college at council level. The most important fact of this era was the expansion in number of schools and student, especially in the fast flourishing metropolitan cities. Furthermore in the late 19th century most southern children especially living in rural areas received more than an elementary education.
Reform means to make changes or to improve on something, typically a social, economic, or political issue or institution. During the Progressive Era, spanning from the late 19th to the early 20th century, the United States underwent significant transformations driven by societal, economic, and political upheavals. We need to reform because if we didn't reform and make changes to things throughout the years, then we would be making the same mistakes and we would never learn from them. Amongst this dynamic landscape, labor reform emerged as a critical agenda, addressing the injustices faced by workers in an industrialized nation.
