I am interested in the BDP’s Conflict Resolution & Peace Studies topic, specifically on the course strands of Societal Conflict Resolution and Interpersonal Conflict Resolution. During the summer, I interned at the Coryell County Attorney’s office, and while I aided in sorting through paperwork and filing, I was given the privilege to follow my supervisors to their court affairs. I was guided and taught various things about court proceedings, the attorney discipline, and viewed a number of Child Protective Service and Justice Court cases. On those particular days, I had a close up observation of the justice system, and its effects on the individuals within. I want to explore why people so enthusiastically speak, yet do not try to communicate and understand one another. Thus, why I am so interested in taking the Societal Conflict Resolution and Interpersonal Conflict Resolution strands. These particular strands offers courses that I feel would help benefit me in understanding individuals in the larger scale of things, to support me in acknowledging the social unrest and conflict that is constantly in our society, and to help firm my resolution in aiding others in turbulent times. A few prominent courses have caught my attention that may become part of my BDP experience. Courses, such as CMS 345P: Communication and Public Opinion, will give me the knowledge on how to build bridges to others, to connect and come to a mutual understanding. SOC 307L: Gender/Race/Class Amer Soc would solidify and help bring insight on the struggles of the groups in America. I want to better my understanding of conflicts in society and its effects on the people, and then learn the skills necessary to better mediate between groups peacefully. I wish to no longer sit complacently in the presence of an extremely flawed system: by acquiring the abilities necessary through the BDP, I hope I can find my answers in somehow changing society for peace, even in little ways.
