Senior Living Lubbock and Companionship For many seniors, life took an unexpected turn. Their plans for a white picket fence protecting a brood of grandkids and vacations on the beach with their spouse did not turn out as planned. Instead, these seniors found themselves isolated and alone with a true lack of companionship. If a senior is living in Lubbock, there is an answer.
One sweltering, stifling hot afternoon in July, I had the immense privilege of participating in Share-the-Lake Day as one of my first volunteer events being a member of the National Honor Society. Share-the-Lake Day is an annual sponsored event that offers nursing home inhabitants an outdoor lunch and a day out on the lake. I have always enjoyed spending time with elderly people because I find their wisdom and experience to be incredibly intriguing and fascinating. I loved listening to their stories of which they were extremely content to share. To see their eyes dance as they recounted a fond memory from their youth or witness their excitement when I mentioned various thoughts of mine that reminded them of a favorite family member or close
The “Outsiders” made me think about the rules that groups give us are strongly founded on what they see as defiance. It made me think that some rules are given within a group are not remotely necessary and that we as a society are to blame for what is deemed as “socially acceptable”. Deviants may not even be actually deviants but that’s what they are labeled by society because they think, what the deviant did was wrong, which could be made up by what society thinks is okay behavior. The relation to this reading and the sociology course shows how society controls us and how they consider we should act. It reminded me of how society tells us as women that showing off our body parts is deemed as trashy and not lady like, but men can do so without
Relationships in older adults are harder since most have a way of doing things and are reluctant to change. However, change is doable and be great. An example would be when Harry begins to develop feelings for Erica. Harry who has been a playboy for so long is reluctant to settle down her since he is comfortable using women. This disheartens Erica who has looked past here once ridged standards and began to fall for
The principle of development and aging as a continual process of life is the understanding that a person’s behavior cannot be attributed to one time during a person’s life course and that all areas of a person’s life course have an impact (Schmalleger, 2012). One of the central organizing principles of the perspective is the link between human lives and social relationships with friends and family across a person’s life span. These relationships have considerable influence on a person’s life course (Schmalleger,

There are 7.4 billion people in the world today, and each person is so vastly different than the next. However, despite many cultural and social barriers, those 7.4 billion people experience the same thing: relationships. Unlike countless other divisions, such as language and social cues, relationships find a way to produce a common ground. Although they are the building block of society, they can affect people in many different ways. As seen in Hamlet, Oedipus the King, and Fences, relationships can be either a destructive force or one that creates a more positive outlook on life.
The result shows that 46 or 92% of the elderlies wished that they had more respect to themselves. Forty or 80% of them said that they sometimes pity themselves while 34 or 68% of them perceived that they have little or sometimes nothing to help their family and friends. In addition, 33 or 66% of elderlies said that they are not happy with their accomplishments in life while 32 or 64% of them perceived that they do not have capabilities and good qualities that they can be proud of and shared that they find it difficult to accept the changes happening in themselves at the present moment. Moreover, 28 or 56% of the elderlies shared that they often think and wish that they are in other people’s condition while half of them (50%) think and feel that they are useless. Further, despite of the adversities experienced in later life, 32 or 64% of elderlies didn’t think that they
How does social class affect people’s lives? Social class groups individual persons into class hierarchy which is determined by person’s income, education, wealth, social connection, and job profession. Social class classifies people into spectrum of class such as lower class, lower middle class, middle class, upper middle class, and upper class. Depending on which class an individual falls in affects earnings, education, respect, success, status, family life, health, job occupation, and social connection. An individual that lies in higher part of class spectrum gets more opportunities and has better lives than an individual that lies in lower part of class spectrum that does not get opportunities and struggles in lives.
Theories of late adulthood development are quite diverse in later adulthood than at any other age. They include self-theory, identity theory and stratification theory. The self-theory tries to explain the core self and search to maintain one’s integrity and identity. The older adults tend to integrate and incorporate their various experiences with their vision and mission for their respective community (Berger, 2008). Also, the older people tend to feel that their attitude, personalities and beliefs have remained in a stable state over their lives even as they acknowledge that physical changes have taken place in their bodies.
Solid skills in reading, writing and math are very important. However, much of what we know is learned outside of school. Experiences shape who we are and the knowledge we gain from those events can be helpful to success inside of school and inevitably one’s future. Through an examination of articles and personal experiences one can see the difference socioeconomic class makes on experiences with education.
Robert Frost expresses rural American life and love of nature through the scenes and metaphors of his poetry. In the “Stopping By Woods,” Frost writes, “The woods are lovely, dark and deep, / But I have promises to keep, / and miles to go before I sleep.” He put in mind of the “promises” he has to keep of the miles he still must travel even though he want to enjoy the great view in the snowy woods.
The social environment is no more immune to the passage of time than is the human body” (Teas and Benignton, 1982, pg. 12). Teas and Benignton discuss the industrial and political world developed the idea that the old are less valuable employees then the youth (1982, pg.17). The late adulthood stage needs to express the importance of self-sufficiency, individualism, and even privacy in the psychosocial development. During this time in one’s life they are possibly experiencing great loss of individualism. Kaufman discusses the observation of family members of the elderly who feel they must be the decision
