Socioemotional selectivity theory is the idea that as adults age, they are more selective about the relationships in which they invest their emotional energy because of the sense of they are running out of time (WWK, 188). When time is limited, you would want to make the most out of those relationships and enjoy spending time together since loved ones seem to mean more than even. This in turn protects against loneliness. Relationships serve two functions; one is an informational function which provide important knowledge.
