3. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
Experiment A shows that the compound present in the dust sample is Sodium Nitrate. Experiment B shows the dust is inhalable and can directly get to the lungs. From the oxidation state of nitrogen, Nitrate is the most oxidized form of nitrogen present in the environment. It accounts for the majority of the total available nitrogen in surface waters (Environment Canada 2012). Through a dual oxidation process, Nitrate is formed in a reaction of Nitrogen with Ammonium ion producing fertilizer and manure. The oxidation state of a nitrate compound is 1- . Nitrate is the conjugate base of nitric acid (HNO3), a strong …show more content…

It is produced also by the reaction of ammonium nitrate and sodium hydroxide, sodium bicarbonate or sodium carbonate.
NH4NO3 + NaOH → NaNO3 + NH4OH
NH4NO3 + NaHCO3 → NaNO3 + NH4HCO3
2NH4NO3 + Na2CO3 → 2NaNO3 + (NH4)2CO3
Sodium Nitrate (Nitratine) is Isostructural with Calcium Carbonate (Calcite). This means they have similar chemical structures. In terms of their crystal nature, they are also said to be Isomorphous. Sodium Nitrate is called Nitratine when it is in a mineral state.

3.3. USES OF SODIUM NITRATE

Sodium Nitrate is used in manufacturing smoke bombs. The sample preserved in a small water bottle deformed the bottle and expanded it. This proves it is viable product in the manufacture of gun powder and smoke bombs. It is used in making ceramics and glass. This compound can be used in meat preservation. In both organic and inorganic states, it is used in fertilizer production.

3.4. CALCIUM CARBONATE

Literature studies proved some traces of Calcium Carbonate in the sample. Its natural means is marble or quarry. Marble is a metamorphic rock composed of recrystallized carbonate minerals, most commonly calcite or dolomite (Kearey, 2001).
