Cedric really wants to get into MIT, but poor Cedric keeps getting shut down by mostly everybody about him not being ¨MIT material¨. Cedric’s high school failed to provide him an excellent education by shutting down his dreams into getting the college he desires to attend, the low self esteem he has, no longer wants to attend MIT, and being scared for being known for his intelligence. The use of children in the Sierra Leone Civil War was widespread, with up to 10,000 children taking part in the conflict and up to eighty percent of RUF forces between the ages of seven and fourteen. Ishmael is one of these children. In his memoir, A Long Way Gone, Lieutenant Jabati and his men exploit several techniques to transform these frightened children into ruthless killing machines. They do this through the use of drugs, pop culture, as well as character and emotional manipulation. Tactics like these create habits and addictions that are almost impossible to break.
How can challenges change people throughout their lives? Challenges shape people in many different ways, whether it be for good or bad. The effects of these challenges make people who we are, and shapes the characters found in stories and novels. The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor showcases change in characters through Alyss Heart, a young princess in Wonderland. Beddor uses these conflicts to convey how Alyss changes as a character throughout the novel.
It is why we write books; to tell the tales we wish were our own, but sadly, disappointedly, will never be. We idealize ourselves in our characters, we project our personalities, our thoughts, our emotions, into the characters on the page, the ink our medium of imagination. We write stories, imagining ourselves to be the perfect heroes we write about. However, as we see at the end of “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” fate is a fickle mistress, and romantics like Janie don’t get their “happily-ever-afters.”
Character’s in The Cage have faced many difficult challenges and choices not only against the Germans but against themselves. Many decisions were based on logic and choices that benefited both friends and family as well as the person themselves. However some decisions were made because their was no other choice, it was a choice of survival. Choices needed to be made about staying in Poland or going to the labour camps, overcoming physical challenges, and making decisions on how to save your family. Yulek’s name was on the deportation list, and he made a choice to go to the camps with his sister Faygele.
Forgiving someone is one of the best things you could do. However, for you to forgive someone, you must accept what has happened and be ready to move on. Forgiving someone gives them an opportunity to redeem themselves, and allows them to move on as well. By accepting the past, you might find reasoning within the mistakes of the others, and give you as better understanding of how you should act. Forgiveness is a large part of The First Stone, and within the story is a valuable lesson:
Frederic’s main internal conflict within himself was how to distance himself from the horrors of war. In this quote Frederic was being psychologically tortured, as he was forced to witness men being executed. Frederic was in a no win situation. If he stayed he was likely to be shot; if he ran he was likely to be shot. He was tired of the mind games he had to endure.
In most stories, all developing characters have flaws. Many problems are caused by a character’s personal flaw. They can also be what draws the reader in, and it can be what connects the reader to the character. A certain fatal flaw is the inability to let go. In the stories, “Helen on Eighty-Sixth Street”, “The Cask of Amontillado”, and “The Scarlet Ibis” all of the characters are related because of their inability to let go.

Who Was Lydia? Celeste Ng, author of the novel Everything I Never Told You, explores the dynamics of a family sodden with racial limitations, burdened with expectations, and plagued with an urge to belong. Ng, throughout the novel, seems to view the concept of being an “other” in society as a negative but necessary aspect of life and that is seemingly reflected with the Lees family. What sets the Lees apart from others is that they are a racially-diverse family and each member of the family is alienated by each other and society.
“The ways in which the characters in Lorraine Hansberry’s play, A raisin in the sun, are affected by racial imbalances and respond to the injustices engendered by such inequities are solely influenced by their gender.” I agree with this statement to an extent. Although it is correct that gender plays a big role in this play, there are other factors to consider. Context:
The play “ A Raisin In The Sun “ wrote by Lorraine Hansberry is a inspiring play about the Younger family. A typical African American family in the late 1950’s trying to make life better for themselves. They’re a family trying to overcome the difficulties and obstacles that comes with being black in America in that time. Obstacles such as lynchings, segregation, racial discrimination and overall the difficulties that comes with being black in America. With external problems within the family the characters also internal conflicts within themselves.
“Two Kinds,” by Amy Tan, essentially revolves around the struggle of Jing Mei and her constant conflict with her mother. Throughout her life, she is forced into living a life that is not hers, but rather her mom’s vision of a perfect child; because her mother lost everything, which included her parents and kids, so her only hope was through Jing Mei. Jing Mei’s mom watches TV shows such as the Ed Sullivan Show, which gives her inspiration that her daughter should be like the people and actors. First her mom saw how on the television a three-year-old boy can name all the capitals of the states and foreign countries and would even pronounce it correctly. Her mom would quiz Jing Mei on capitals of certain places, only to discover that
