The purpose of “Why, You Reckon?” by Langston Hughes is to accurately display, through the times of that century and human emotion, that despite money, power, and the color of your skin there can still be an unhappiness of the soul. There is evidence in the beginning of the short story of two men’s unhappiness in life the symbol of them being uncontent was their hunger. “Man, ain’t you hongry.... Well, sir, I’m tellin’ you, I was so tired and hongry and cold that night.” (253- 254).
Betsy Betsy, nicknamed “Pollyanna Cowgirl” by Doreen and Esther, is a cheery, bubbly girl that is on the same scholarship as Esther. She seems very well brought-up and like a hard worker. Esther goes back and forth between seeing herself as one with Betsy and one with Doreen, and it seems like Esther wishes she could be as high-spirited and cheerful as Betsy is. Betsy is also quite physically attractive; Esther refers to her “bouncing blonde ponytail and Sweetheart-of-Sigma-Chi smile”. Esther seems to looks upon her with both disdain and admiration.

The Harlem Renaissance explored themes of economic social prosperity, the importance of community, the power of rebirth, and the value of self-expression, and the role of spirituality. Through the neighborhood gossiping about Janie, to not being able to go to the funeral, to her taking off her head rag, and to reminiscing her flashback to phoebe, Zora Neale Hurston departs from the harlem renaissance value of community and reflects the harlem renaissance value of self expression.

Eliezer and his family got captured and taken to camps, while some died and others were injured. Eliezer had to use his faith in god to know they would come out alive even if he had second thoughts.

Denial, Acceptance, and Resilience in Zora Neal Hurston’s Literature Since the 1930s, individuals have lived under a certain power or authority in which some defy or submit to it. Zora Neal Hurston writes two compelling stories, surrounding the protagonists, 2 black women. Janie from “Their Eyes Were Watching God” and Delia from “Sweat”, endure a myriad of adversity. Both are black women who spend their life in abuse and discrimination.
As Janie ages, she has been going through different stages of loves and misloves, which gradually introduced her to reveal her feminnity. In the book Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora Neale Hurston depictures Janie’s feminism through her growth of life from an innocent and vulnerable 17 years old girl who had not yet experienced love to a true women who forgets “all those things (she doesn’t) want to remember, and remember(s) everything (she doesn’t) want to forget” (1) in various of perspectives: Janie’s education and her grandmother’s instigation about marriage; Janie’s misloves with Logan and Jody; and Janie’s love for Tea Cake. Before Janie even learned the concept of “love”, Hurston showed how Janie was raped when she still had her “womanly”

Whether it’s a fictional sci-fi or a biography about the 18th president, there will always be a goal to consummate. One example is “New Directions,” by Maya Angelou. In the story “New Directions,” by Maya Angelou, Annie Johnson has to think of a way to keep a roof under her and her children when her husband leaves.
”Sweat” by Zora Neale Hurston tells the story of Sykes Jones, and his wife, Delia, who never strays from her beliefs. Sykes’ character traits lead him directly to his death. His cruel treatment of his wife results in her stand by and do nothing as he walks into death’s arms. His arrogance leads him to believe that he has control over things that he does not. His infidelity is a catalyst for it all, as he wants Delia out of her own house, and he will stop at no measure to get her out.
During the Harlem Renaissance, people believed that this was a time of discrimination but the African Americans took it as a new type of self-determination and pride within their race, and with excitement for the future they could keep a positive focus which later leads to the civil rights movement of 1964. Which created a nonviolent movement that abolished legalized racial segregation, and discrimination throughout the US. In Zora Neale Hurston's book, Their eyes are watching God, Hurston both reflects and departs from the Harlem Renaissance belief that there is excitement for the future as shown by Janie's accomplishments, Independence as well as struggles with her different husbands and adventures. One way the novel shows a reflection is through independence and a sense of newness.

Emerson was the fourth son out of eight children born of William, a Unitarian minister previously of a liberal Congregationalist, and Ruth (Haskins) Emerson. Religious and intellectual development was very important to William and Ruth Emerson and each parent were respected in the community and expected the same things out of their children. In 1800, Ralph lost a sister, Phebe Ripley, and then lost a brother in 1807, John Clarke, from tuberculosis, which almost killed Ralph Waldo Emerson several times throughout his life. Ralph lost Robert Bulkeley, another brother who was also mentally retarded, in 1859.
