Someone is a non linear narrative because it is the story of a woman that recaps her life to her caretaker when she is 70 years old. Her caregiver listened multiple time to her stories, hence the fact that he says “but your mother couldn’t teach you to bake the bread.” Marie at the age of seventy, with a bad eye, and little motion, tries to recall her memories and she does so through a nonlinear narrative, in fact the story is about more than just a beginning, middle and end. The order of the events in this story is organized and interpreted in a way that reflects Marie’s thoughts and her psychological state. In the first pages the reader also encounters Pegeen, a young woman that describes herself with the world “amadan,” a fool. Soon after Marie talks to her, the young woman falls down her basement stairs and dies. Pegeen even though is not an active character in the story, plays a significative role in Marie’s memories throughout her life. Pegeen in fact is the first character that the reader meet and the last one mentioned by the old Marie. In fact the book start with “Pegeen Chehab walked up from the subway in the evening light. Her good spring coat was powder blue: her shoes were black and covered insteps of her long feet….She was not a pretty girl particularly.” The book ends with Marie recalling Pegeen’s death after long time by saying “On the day before she died, Pegeen leaned down to me, her eyes sparkling with her plan. He said, If I see him, I’ll get real close. I’ll pretend to fall, see, and he’ll catch me and say, Is it you again? Someone nice.” Pegeen symbolise the time that is past for Marie. In fact she was also the first death she ever experienced of someone close to her. Also Marie talks about her multiple times in the narrative because she sees herself through Pegeen. They are both in a quest to find someone nice to be understood from, and
