Something In Between by: Melissa De La Cruz An ISU by: Keren Main Characters Jasmine De Los Santos is hardworking, passionate, motivated. She has sacrificed and stayed focused from the time she began grade school. In part one of the book, she wins a title of National Scholar – one coveted by students across the United States. Unbeknownst to her until the end of chapter five, she is also an illegal immigrant. Her parents moved to the States from Manila, Philippines and forged their documentation. She meets Royce again in Washington D.C at the National Scholars dinner and catches feelings. Royce Blakely is the son of a high-ranking congressman, people tend to assume that Royce is also high-class. Their fights, the judges ruling and the article. Foil is when two characters are put into similar situations but react differently. An example of this is Royce and Mason, they both have a father who’s a politician (they’re brothers). Royce internalizes all his feelings and shuts people out, but he’s vulnerable with Jasmine and we find out that he is trying to impress his father and be just like him. In the other hand, Mason is a bully, he’s abusive towards Kayla, mean to others, and rebels regularly making it seem like he hates his father (when he leaked the article) but he just wants the same things as Royce (pg. 222). Another example of foil in this book is Jasmine and her brothers, particularly when they found out that they were undocumented. Jasmine spirals and feels lost. She also becomes bitter but less stressed at the same time. It takes her some time to adjust but her brothers are totally different. They make jokes because they don’t fully understand – they’re too young. Their family says, “To them, everything’s a big adventure.” (pg. 315) Symbols and
