Symbolism is essential to the theme of the book because throughout the book there are instances where something is supposed to have a double meaning. Fahrenheit 451 is a book written by Ray Bradbury and through the book there is a strong use of symbolism to make something also mean something else. The book follows a firemen Guy Montag who instead of stopping fires he starts them to get rid of books that people own because books aren’t allowed. Guy Montag finds out over time that he made a mistake burning all of the books and he tries to hide as many books as he can without getting caught. Ray Bradbury uses symbolism in the characteristics of fire for example when the fire was being used to keep the people warm when Montag walked by that meant
Officer says, “ He had a gun.” This doesn't directly show symbolism but it give examples on how the police represent fear. Furthermore another example of symbolism is when Jerome and Emmitt Till are talking to Sarah, and Jerome opens a book a Peter Pan book and reads a page it states that “All children, except one, grow up.” This represents youth and the fear of growing up but Emmitt and Jerome will never grow up.
For instance, When Tom was talking to his wife, the loose paper and the open window are mentioned as a form of foreshadowing the fact that sooner in the plot that same paper would fly out the window that is open while he is conversing with his wife. This evidence shows the use of foreshadowing early in the plot of the story to further translate and allow the plot afterwards to be understood.
Another example of usage of symbolism in this book would be Alcohol. Alcohol is used as a symbol to convey a deeper meaning. Alcohol in this novel symbolizes that many of the characters face problems and obstacles that are very difficult, but they don’t really face them head-on. They try to escape from their problems in many ways, and the main one is alcohol. The characters are having tough times in their lives, where they really don’t know what to do and how to handle their obstacles or setbacks to be happy.
Foreshadowing means to show or indicate beforehand, and in the novel Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, foreshadowing plays a major role in the storyline. Many events in the story foreshadow things that later happen, and once they do, the relationships between the events are very clear. Of Mice and Men follows the lives of George Milton and Lennie Small after they have run away from a town named Weed because of a situation Lennie had with a girl. George and Lennie work as migrant workers traveling together to different ranches in order to make money. A big part of the George and Lennie’s lives is the dream that they share: to make enough money and buy their own ranch and be able to grow crops and raise animals.
These examples include Moose being warned about the rules from the warden, the introduction of the character Natalie, and Piper causing trouble for Moose. The warden warning moose about the rules shows foreshadowing because it leaves me to believe that he will at some point break the rules and get caught. The way the warden speaks about Al Capone makes Moose anxious to even mention him. During school, Piper begins to speak about Al Capone and
The use of taste and sour appeals to your sense of taste to help depict the bitterness of the whiskey. Another symbol is the road, which is a desolate, transient thing full of danger, the man refers to them as "blood cults". The director really emphasises the importance of the fire by the way it contrasts against the gloomy dark post apocalyptic
Stephen King uses multiple literary devices in his novel On Writing to convey the feel of a fictional novel, though it is based on facts from his life. King effectively uses these devices to convey his theme of persevering through adversity to become a greater writer and person. A major technique used in his writing is imagery that comes in many forms, precisely in this passage. There was a sharp smell of alcohol. A clank as the ear doctor opened his sterilizer.
The cigarettes, the white flowers, and the smoking hole all represent different things in this novel but all together they help to paint a picture of what this novel is really about.
