The song I choose to analyze as poetry is J. Cole’s song “Hold It Down”. This song is from his mixtape The Warm Up, which is my favorite mixtape by him. This song is produced and written by J. Cole whose real name is Jermaine Lamarr Cole. He produces his own songs and writes them himself, which is one of the reasons why he is my favorite rapper. Whenever I am having a bad day, I always find myself listening to this song.

Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” was written about the Vietnam War, but people choose to interpret the song as a cry for civil rights. A song does not need to begin as socially aware to be considered a protest song because it’s about how it’s interpreted by others and used.

People who feel strongly towards a certain political view within society create protest songs, and this is the only way they know how to express their opinions. Protest songs can come in many different musical genres such as folk and rock music.
