In the book Night, by Elie Wiesel, there was a very strong shift in the tone just within the first three chapters. “The shopkeepers were doing good business, the students lived among their books, and the children played in the streets”(Weisel 6). It is shown here that they were living ordinary, peaceful lives. “The shadows around me roused themselves as if from a deep sleep and left silently in every direction”(Weisel 14). This is where people began to no longer feel peaceful and began the long journey of fear and worry that would get worse throughout the book.
Elie Wiesel’s “Night” depicts death, obliteration, and anguish while directly depicting the suffering he witnessed during his time at Auschwitz, a concentration camp for Jews during World War II. Within the story, there is an overwhelming amount of times the Jews had been in distress. Many children had been separated from their parents and all of the Jews were taken from their homes. Their suffering seemed endless. They were no longer teachers, homeowners, or priests.
The author of the Night did not understand why God punishes the innocent and righteous, who worship Him, even in the death camp, what did they do? They pray for you! Glorify your name. Wiesel openly expressed his hatred for God, was not afraid. He thought that after what happened in Auschwitz, the religious dimension of Jewish identity completely lost its meaning.
The small town of Sighet, also known as Sighetu Marmatiei, is located today in Transylvania, Romania. Through the years, Sighet has had strong ties to the Jewish religion, just as it does today. The town has been part of both Romania and Hungary at times, and has seen a decreasing number of residents since 1944. During the 1940s, anti-Jewish sentiment was at its peak, with Adolf Hitler being the face of the anti-Jewish movement. By 1944, World War I had started, and more than 14,000 Jews resided in Sighet, but by the end of May of the same year, none remained, and Sighet was comparable to a ghost town.
At what point does respect no longer matter? When does the need for survival take over grief? When do the tears dry up in order to stay alive?
Eliezer or “Elie” Wisel was a Romanian-born American Jewish writer, professor, political activist, Nobel Laureate and Holocaust survivor. Elie was also the narrator in the novel Night. A major point discussed by Elie was how we as the future generation should remember the victims of the Holocaust. Wisel points out that “To forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time.” In other words, if we don’t learn from history it is bound to repeat itself.
In Night, written by Elie Wiesel, the hanging of the little Dutchman pipel in chapter 4 symbolizes the death of faith in religion among Elie and other Jews who witnessed the act. In the plot, the young pipel was killed mercilessly by SS officers. During his execution, carried out alongside two other inmates, all found to be in possession of arms, onlookers were desperate for God to offer his supreme help. “Where is merciful God, where is He?” (64) and “For God’s sake, where is God?”
The only true way for everyone to have human rights is to live in a utopia. Wiesel, Elie’s “Night.” helped support this claim, as shown in the essay. Night/Theme Elie Wiesels memoir is called Night because night is associated with fear, loneliness, and darkness. Elie felt all of these thing through the holocaust. Elie compared himself to the religious story of Job, Elie feels like God let atrocities and persecution happen to good men who did nothing wrong. They did not deserve any part of what was happening to them. In this quote Elie is saying I did not deserve this horrible matter to happen to me, I practiced my religion and had lots of faith and you still let this horrible stuff happen to me.

In the book, the reader will notice there will be an extraordinary amount of reasons why and how Elie and his father have a close relationship within the 11-month period they are in buna (A section of Auschwitz Concentration camp). Despite this poor quality of living, he and his father maintained a close relationship. In Auschwitz, prisoners got around 100 calories to eat a day, and most of the prisoners were moving dirt or something related to labor for the whole day.
My theme for night was the preservation of self over others. Throughout the book many people become selfish and start to care only of themselves including Elie. The reason why I chose this as my theme is because I find it very interesting how under certain situations people change very rapidly. Elie soon comes to realize this , but does little to change it. Mostly ,because he needs to be this way in order to survive.
