Songbird Symbolism In Siddhartha

Both of these events are highly symbolic within the novel. First, Siddhartha dreams of Kamala’s rare songbird, which she keeps locked in a cage. The rare songbird in the cage symbolizes Siddhartha soul, trapped and confined with no way out. The cage that locks the songbird symbolizes the world of physical pleasures that possessed Siddhartha’s mind and soul, therefore preventing him from ever reaching enlightenment. The release of the songbird symbolizes Siddhartha’s leaving of the city, and his newfound freedom from worldly pleasures and desires which had possessed and trapped him. The release of the songbird and Siddhartha’s travels from the city to the countryside allow him to re-encounter himself and his enlightenment. In Siddhartha’s meditation
