Sonia Baker, an assistant who worked for Congressman Stephen Collins was murdered at the train station when she was about to head to work. The death of Sonia was revealed to Congressman Stephen Collins as he walked into his office. As Stephen addresses the press that morning, he informed them about Sonia’s death and teared up in front of the public. Meanwhile, Cal McAffrey, a journalist and also a close friend of Stephen works hard to find out the motive of the murder and attempts to publish the truth to the public. This movie talks about how importance of the news and media as they reveal the secrets to Sonia’s murder. This paper also attempts to show how the news and media can play a big role in the United States governing system. For instance, when Cal got a bunch of photos that has Sonia in it, he did not reveal it to Bell- the police officer. Instead, he just shared it with his colleagues which were Della and Cameron. This can directly be related to media biasness because as Cal got on hold with those photos, he had extra information. The information he had on hand not only have political value but also has social and economic value. Thus, by holding on to those photos, it benefited Cal and his colleagues because they had more evidence. In class, we also did touch on interest groups which is on Chapter 8 in Gateways to Democracy. An interest group is a group of people who shares a similar interest while trying to influence the public to follow their interest. In this movie, they displayed an interest group called PointCorp.
