Poetry Analysis

The poem I chose is “Sonnet on Love XIII” by Jean de Sponde. The theme of this poem is the power of love. The tone of this is calm and loving. Some types of figurative language used are metaphor, and rhyme.

The first type of figurative language I mentioned is metaphor. A metaphor is a figure of speech in which the word or phrase is applied to an object or action which is physically or literally impossible. Sponde used a metaphor in the last stanza in the poem, “from which to move a world that is out of joint” (Sponde, 2001). The metaphor in the line is “to move a world” which is an action that is impossible. What the author meant by using that metaphor is taking the idea from Archimedes words and using it to show the theme the power of love. The metaphor aids to the loving tone by saying that their love for each other has the power to move the world and they can overcome their hardships because the bond between them will become stronger and stronger. …show more content…

Rhyme is the sound between words that correspond with each other . Sponde has used rhyme to flow the words of the poem together and aid in the tone. Sponde used rhyme in all stanzas but in a different order to capture the attention and interest of the the reader. “and I can move the world. Paradoxical, clever, his remark which first explained the use of the lever” (Sponde, 2001). “We find in our lives? Here is that fine fixed point from which to move a world that is out of joint as he could have done, had he known a love like this” (Sponde, 2001).
