Every book, play, tv show, and movie has a hero of some sort. This could be a super hero, an epic hero, or a tragic hero. Aristotle defined a tragic hero as "a character in literature who makes a judgement error that inevitably leads to his or her own destruction". It has been argued for years who the tragic hero is in Sophocles' play Antigone, but the true tragic hero is Antigone because she is loyal to her family and she has suffered much more than she deserved.
Antigone is the last story of the famous Greek trilogy and tragedy, The Oedipus Cycle, and was written by Sophocles. In all Greek tragedies, including Antigone, they must include a character that is considered a tragic hero. A tragic hero must have a tragic spirit, vision, and suffering. In Oedipus Rex, the first story of the trilogy, it is clearly understood that Oedipus is the tragic hero in this story. However, the tragic hero of Antigone is a bit debatable.
This paper will be considering the difference between Sophocles’ Oedipus Tyrannus and a version of this play in film “Oedipus Rex” by Stratford. The specific aspects that will be compared are: the use of formal aspects of Greek tragedy, visual aspects, technical aspects and characterization. Although there are many differences between each; this paper will also discuss the similarities shared between these two experiences of the play. An interesting aspect to study is the use of formal aspects of Greek tragedy.
Critic Northrop Frye claims that tragic heroes “seem the inevitable conductors of the power about them… Conductors may of course be instruments as well as victims of the divisive lightning.” A perfect example of this assertion would be King Oedipus in the classical tragic play “Oedipus Rex,” written by Sophocles, where Oedipus, himself, becomes the victim of his doomed fate. As someone who was born and raised of royal blood, he becomes too proud and ignorant, believing that he was too powerful for his fate. Using the metaphor “great trees [are] more likely to be struck by lightning than a clump of grass,” Frye compares the heroic but unfortunate Oedipus to the great trees as they both are apt to experience victimization of tragic situations

Data:For example the priest says “Oedipus greatest in all men’s eyes We pray,find some strength again and rescue or city”. Warrant:From this quote readers can see that how empowered oedipus feels like and how people in thebes rely on him,Clearly this scene represents the power stage of the tragic hero.
Oedipus the King, by Sophocles, is really a story about the necessity of placing more faith in others and their counsel than in oneself and one’s own beliefs. Repeatedly the titular character is pleaded with to listen to and accept the advice of those around him and each time he refuses to obey. Ultimately, Oedipus’ tendency to do perform the actions he would prefer to do rather than to allow his family to help guide him leads to his downfall and loss of the throne. A common characteristic of Greek tragedy is the “fatal flaw” of the main character and how this flaw leads to the character’s misfortune.
This work by Sophocles is based on one person who has been lied to for his whole entire life. Oedipus is the person that this is named after. When he was a child his father Laius and his mother Jocasta had a child, but sent him to be killed because the prophesies told the father that one day this child would kill him and sleep with his wife. Now, twenty years later it become a reality one day on Oedipus journey he ended up killing servants and an old man who was the King of Thebes. After, he killed this man he went on with his life later when Oedipus he defeated the sphinx who guarded Thebes and after this he was praised by many and was placed with the honor of Kingship.

Tragedy is intended to create catharsis by making the audience sympathize with the protagonist. Therefore, the point of a tragic character is to make these emotions. An effective tragedy causes the audience’s emotions to mirror this rise and fall. Antigone has a few tragic flaws going for her, or rather against her.
This next poem also relates two naturally paired texts from Humanities 10, Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex and Aristotle’s Poetics. The engagement between these two works is especially unusual because Poetics is a meta-commentary on the nature of tragedy, and Oedipus is a tragedy itself. Because of this, the dynamic between the two voices in this poem constitutes a narrow view being refuted by a wider view. The first voice, the character Oedipus, is a tragic hero, someone who is overcome by sorrow yet cannot understand the reason for his suffering. The second voice, on the other hand, can be considered that of a well-informed tragedian, in this case embodied by Aristotle.
Everyone in life, looks for their place in their world. The world is a immense place, and not everyone gets what they want. The world itself is unjust to many people, and there's nothing that they can do about it. In the ancient Greek play of Oedipus the Rex, they’re many messages that we the reader can interpret; however, Sophocles the creator of the play had a specific message to the protagonist. He showed his message through a tragic flaw.

Sophocles, a celebrated playwright for more than 50 years, was born in 496 BC just outside Athens, Greece. Sophocles began his writing career in 468 BC, when he took first prize in the Dionysia theatre competition over Aeschylus, the current reigning master of Athenian drama. During his writing career, Sophocles wrote a total of 123 plays, but only sven have survived. Sophocles changed many aspects of drama, most importantly by developing his characters more than earlier playwrights, and by adding a third actor. Sophocles died in 406 BC, at the age of ninety, and left behind a large influence on the development of drama.
