Women have always been seen as lower than men. This is mainly due to civilization from the beginning of time thinking of women as being helpers to men. One way society tried to keep women beneath men is by limiting their education. By keeping women uneducated, they did not have a way to show they are equal. Women are equal to men and the readings show that throughout history women have fought for their way in the world. Even today, women are still continuing that fight to reach true equality with men.

Sor Juana Ines De La Cruz wanted to learn but due to her environment she had limited opportunities. In “Thirst for Knowledge,” she writes how a portion of women did not want to learn and how she was jealous of that. She says that she felt like an outcast for her thirst for knowledge. In another example. Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz showed how much she wanted to escape the expectations set for women. She became a nun just so she would not have to get married. This was a dominant change she took in her life that is not seen in the other writers. The other women simply wrote about their frustrations but Sor Ines de la cruz actually took action to combat the inequality. She was a great poet from Continental Europe. “The Health-Man” is her writing about her passionate for her children however not herself. She does not mention herself and how she was feeling, but she does mention the beautiful nature. This continues in “In the grass” where she mentions “please, a soul, to fly with him (Droste-Hulshoff, 2165)”. This line is important because it shows that her heart is away from her home and children. She wants to fly and get away from the house which is just a symbol for women duties. Women had the expectation to stay home and simply look over the family, but many women did not want this. “The Yellow Wallpaper” provide an extreme example of how women felt. The story explains the life of a woman who has been locked in room with only her husband who visits. The story ends with the woman becoming crazy over the wallpaper and completely losing her mind. Throughout the story, the wife has been telling her husband that something is wrong with her however her husband decides to ignore her. The husband instead puts her in what can be inferred as an insane asylum. Even though the woman was right, the husband was always the one who made the decisions in the family because he was a man.
