Sound Design in Theatre Kittrell (2009) stated that the history of sound from Greeks began from c.500-146BCE. It placed focus point on the actor’s voice, recitative and song. The music was integral, accompanied choral odes. Sound can be design as the modern practice of microphones, sound effects and background music (Wilson & Goldfarb, 2007). There are five component of sound system namely inputs, signal processing, amplification, output, and glue that used in sound design for a performance (Kittrell, 2009). Gillette (2014) stated that sound design for a theatre is used to support the mood of the play. It referred to as atmospheric sounds which can help the audience to understand the emotional and physical environments of the play. The actions and the expression of actors would be affected by the sound design in a theatre which provides an emotional impact that drives the audience (Wright, 2008). It is because all people have certain reactions to sounds, especially music. For example, slower tempos can tend to depress people. In theatre, the use of sound and music is geared towards the extremes with the purpose to create a moody atmosphere. In result, different music gave different mood to the audience. For example, soft music had been played at first tend to constrain the feeling of sadness of Medea to the audience. Moreover, the volume of sound was clear and it had focus to the action of the actors on the stage.
