The origin of South Asian Canadians can be traced back to South Asia, which includes India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. About half of South Asian Canadians trace their roots back to India, where over 14 different languages are spoken and the major religions are Hinduism, Islam, and Sikhism. South Asian immigration to Canada began in 1903 with a majority of immigrants being Sikhs, who had heard of Canada from British Indian troops in Hong Kong. The immigrants were attracted by high wages. A majority of the immigrants were from farming backgrounds and were mostly males, who left their families for temporary employment in Canada.
