In South of Broad by Pat Conroy the theme is appreciate people for who they are. Leo has a very diverse group of best friends that are not accepted by the community at this period of time. Trevor is gay, Sheba likes to sleep around, Ike and Betty are African-Americans in a town that still has not accepted blacks, and Niles and Starla are orphans from the mountains.
