Sparta started as a small clump of houses, and barely grew to be called a city-state. This made Sparta the underdog making them vulnerable to attack. The Spartans were people who had to fight to survive, they managed to remain a strong city-state with their military tactics. The Spartans had a small army consisting of 8,000 men each taken from the families at age seven to be trained and educated for the military. Taking the boys at seven to educate them is one of the main reason Sparta managed to maintain a strong city-state. The Spartan education system strengths outweigh the weaknesses because they learned the essentials to live a Spartan life.
