Typically girls in high school think about their next date, their next sporting event or their next trip to the shopping mall. In Melinda's case, events like when she was raped, when she called the police and when her friendship with Rachel was revived both positively and negatively impacted her life. One of the major turning points in Melinda's life was when she was raped at a senior summer party. During the first day of school after summer readers can sense the hatred her old friends have for her after she called the police during the summer party. “Aren’t you the one who called the cops at Kyle Rodgers party at the end of the summer...My brother was arrested at that party. He got fired because of the arrest. I can't believe you did that, you Asshole.” This quote is significant because it shows how this turning point has impacted her life negatively because a majority of the school knows she was the one that called called the police at the party. One more reason that getting her friendship with Rachel was a good thing is because Melinda gained some confidence back. In the end of the book on page 183 the author writes how Melinda gains confidence by the way she talks to Rachel. The author also shows how Melinda gains confidence back when Melinda and Heather are talking to each other about why she called the cops on the night of the party. This example is significant because it shows all the ways that melinda has gained her confidence back. This example also relates to my thesis in the way that the event or scenario of Melinda gaining some confidence back will have a positive impact on her life. My last example of how gaining her friend back has had a positive impact on her life is it gave Melinda a chance to let out what happened the night of the
