Be careful what you wish for, events that turn Melinda's life for the worst, Speak Every 107 seconds an American is sexually assaulted. Melinda, the main character in the book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, fell victim to this very stat. Typically girls in high school think about their next date, their next sporting event or their next trip to the shopping mall. In Melinda's case, events like when she was raped, when she called the police and when her friendship with Rachel was revived both positively and negatively impacted her life. One of the major turning points in Melinda's life was when she was raped at a senior summer party. After the summer party that Melinda and her good friend Rachel attended, the readers of this novel can see …show more content…
During the first day of school after summer readers can sense the hatred her old friends have for her after she called the police during the summer party. “Aren’t you the one who called the cops at Kyle Rodgers party at the end of the summer...My brother was arrested at that party. He got fired because of the arrest. I can't believe you did that, you Asshole.” This quote is significant because it shows how this turning point has impacted her life negatively because a majority of the school knows she was the one that called called the police at the party. This quote is connected to my thesis because this even in her life will negatively impact her life. Because Melinda called the police she lost a lot of friends. On the first day of school, the readers of Speak can see that because she called the police that not a lot of people like her anymore. Like before laurie halse shows how melinda's friends had left her behind after the incident of calling the police. This evidence This quote shows exactly how Melinda's friends have left her in the dust and instead of her being in a clan she has to be clanless. This event relates back to my thesis in the way that melinda's action of calling the cops at the summer party she went to , will have a negative impact on her life. Another way that Melinda's life was impacted in a negative way when she called the cop was that others lost …show more content…
This where everything is resolved and the conflict ends. This event is when her relationship with her friend is revived. When her relationship with Rachel was revived she finally has someone to talk to. During the last few week of school, readers of Speak can see that her and Rachel now have more of a positive relationship and now she could talk to someone. ”‘I didn't call the police to break up the party,’ I write, ‘I called... I called them because some guy raped me.” This quote is significant because it shows how Melinda can finally vent someone what happened in the words of what she said to Rachel. One more reason that getting her friendship with Rachel was a good thing is because Melinda gained some confidence back. In the end of the book on page 183 the author writes how Melinda gains confidence by the way she talks to Rachel. The author also shows how Melinda gains confidence back when Melinda and Heather are talking to each other about why she called the cops on the night of the party. This example is significant because it shows all the ways that melinda has gained her confidence back. This example also relates to my thesis in the way that the event or scenario of Melinda gaining some confidence back will have a positive impact on her life. My last example of how gaining her friend back has had a positive impact on her life is it gave Melinda a chance to let out what happened the night of the
