Specters are created by a curse, a split between the animus and the soul, or by being killed by a phantom type monster. It is also said Phantoms are created when someone is killed before they complete their undead transformation. Specter 's in particular are phantoms that like to haunt the areas they had died. They live to trick and beguile travelers who happen into their territory. Physical Observations: Specters appear as they did in life, and are weightless. The most common of specters have a human form, though it is not impossible to see one shaped as a dwarf or even a troll. Social Observations: Specters are often solitary. However, clusters and swarms of the creatures can be created by a cursed ground or by fellow specters. Being they do not have a life span, it is not unusual to see specters appear in clothing from various time periods. They do not converse or show any other sign of a social network. They give an unearthly wail to call their swarm when on a hunt, and will coordinate their tricks and taunts to feed off the target 's fear. Otherwise they seem barely aware of one another 's existence. Behavioral Observations: Specters feed off the energy of the living either indirectly by inspiring fear or through direct touch. They prefer trickery to direct combat, and will observe a traveler before they strike. They are experts at psychological warfare, using the night and natural primitive fears to their advantage. Specter 's hate clerics and their counterparts, the necromancers. They will strive to kill either one in their territory at all costs. Inter-species Observations: Animals panic if they are forced to go within 30 feet of a specter. Even the most loyal mount will resist and potentially attack their own rider to escape the realm of the undead. Because of this, some villages bank on this knowledge by selling small birds to people traveling on foot, to warn them of being too close to a specter 's lair... regardless of if such a lair exists
