David McCullough, in his Wellesley High School Commencement Address, utilizes imagery to convey to his audience that each individual possesses the same common potential. While addressing the graduating class of 2012, McCullough makes a point to emphasize how unexceptional the students are. By bringing to light the fact that the students are all wearing the same “ceremonial costume…shapeless, uniform, one-size-fits-all” (McCullough 1), he illustrates the conformity of the crowd. By depicting the cap and gown, McCullough demonstrates that each student at the ceremony are at the same level.
In 1910, Branch Rickey coached a college team with one black player. That player, Charley Thomas, was refused a hotel room with the team and had to sleep on a cot in Mr. Rickey’s room. Charley was emotionally distressed and he could not sleep. He tried to scratch off the skin of his own hands, wishing he were white, so he would feel as good as anybody.

Starting Tuesday January 17, 2017 – TODAY - all students must park in the upper student parking lot. This includes late arrival and early dismissal students. We are having to do this because students have taken over the front lot and our visitors do not have anywhere to park. Good morning 2023 Metro Magazine Forum my name is Sienna and today I will be persuasively exploring the negative and positive aspects of the 1960s Australian social and cultural issues of being outcasted from a community in the film Jasper Jones. Hook: (film clip) Have you ever felt like you don’t belong and are an outcast in an over-stereotypical society? If so, you are not alone, according to evidnecebasedteaching.org.au, about 28% of all Australian school students feel like they don’t belong in their community. This is 1 in every 4 students, which is roughly 7 students in every class that are feeling that they are outcasted and discriminated against.
Lukianoff and Haidt provide examples of how students are trying to eliminate speech that may be found offensive or discomforting on campus in their article for The Atlantic. Two fairly recent terms to understanding this development in student ideology are “microaggression” and “trigger warning.” A microaggression is inadvertently insulting someone or a group of people with something that was not meant to be offensive. A trigger warning is a warning often provided to students when the subject matter of a class may be found offensive or elicit a strong emotional response. These two terms represent the change in ideology towards speech on campuses.
The Vice President of the Confederacy Alexander H Stephens was very opinionated when it came to the differences between the northern and southern states. Many of his distinctions were mostly based on his idea of the south being in the complete right and the north was lining in falsehoods. His mindset was a very common idea held by most southerners at the time of the civil war. In the formation of the Confederacy, Stephens believed that there were basic rights and rules of nature that the Union was choosing to ignore.
Margaret Talbot’s “Best in Class” is an enticing and informational article about the argument on whether or not Valedictorians are a good thing. Having one valedictorian has been a tradition in schools for many, many years; however, as times change, students are becoming more invested and determined in school, so many kids are missing being valedictorian by 0.001%. Therefore, Talbot brings to light both sides of the story in this extraordinary article. Although Margaret seems to not choose a side, it is obvious through her strong diction and testimonies that she believes that appointing a single valedictorian is an unfair custom throughout U.S. schools.
Speech for NJHS Induction Ceremony Good evening students, faculty, and family members! Thank you, Mrs. Reece and Principal King, for inviting me to this year’s National Junior Honor Society induction ceremony. Students, tonight we honor your achievements in the areas of Scholarship, Citizenship, Responsibility, Community Service, Character, and Leadership as we recognize and celebrate the choices, and at times the sacrifices, you have made. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "The reward of a thing well done is to have done it."
She includes the corruptness nature of the students trying to achieve valedictorian status, and states the unfairness within it without directly stating her opinion. By staying unbiased but informative, the author is easily able to state her opinion indirectly. Brent Bailey, a former student at Plano West Senior High School, shares his story of fighting for valedictorian, but in the long run no one really truly cared about it after high school. In fact, his “‘roommate had no idea [he] was valedictorian. It doesn’t come up, and [Bailey] doesn’t think about it’”
The Unusual Message Reading the commencement speech “This is Water”, written and delivered by David Foster Wallace to students and their families at Kenyon College was nothing like what I was expecting it to be. I can imagine the listeners that were present were just as shocked as I was when they finally grasped the message he was presenting to them that day. Normally when someone delivers a commencement speech to students graduating, it's more along the lines of “be all that you can be” or “You can do it” with emphasis on the word “you.” No one really tells you to think of others first at that point in your lives. However, Wallace did just that.
I am also a member of our school 's student council. I have been our class president for three consecutive years. Not only is this an honor, but it is also a grave responsibility. I have to take requisite action for certain things, while also considering other people 's opinions in a reverent and positive way. In student council, we must continuously propose ideas to better certain aspects of our school for our student body.
I was very honored to know that I qualified as a possible candidate for the National Honor Society. To be honest, I never thought of being in the National Honor Society. Therefore, when I got pulled out of class I immediately thought I had done something wrong. I went home that day and told my mom about it. My mom looked me in the eyes and told me that she was very proud of me and gave me a big hug.
Sound is a very vital part of all films. The concept of sound may seem to be less important than the visual, but this is not the case. Sound and visuals are equal in their importance to the making of films. Meet the Robinsons is an animated film in which a boy travels to the future and meets his family. Throughout this film vocal sounds, music, and environmental sounds contribute to the theme, feelings, and characters.
