In The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me by Sherman Alexie, Alexie states “A smart Indian is a dangerous person, widely feared and ridiculed by Indians and non-Indians alike” (Alexie 364). I would have to disagree with this statement. He is making it sound like just because he is a minority that received somewhat of an education, he should be feared by others. I believe that anyone who is smart and forceful in a community is dangerous because they have the willpower to go to any lengths to uphold their beliefs. On the other hand, I also believe that just because you are smart, you don’t necessarily have to be feared.
Many books follow the pattern of a hero’s journey, which is a cycle that begins and ends in the main character's ordinary world within twelve steps. Freak the Mighty is a story about the adventures of two inseparable best friends (Kevin/Freak and Max) who go through countless adventures together and are opposites, yet are perfect matches. In Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, Max and Kevin follows the hero’s journey throughout the story and become friends. Kevin follows the hero’s journey in the story Freak the Mighty. One stage of the hero's journey is the supreme ordeal.
What do you think a hero looks like? In the novel, Freak The Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, it shows that heroes come in all shape and sizes. In the novel Max and Kevin are the main characters. Max’s father killed his mother so other kids gave Max a hard time and bullied him. Freak was also given a hard time in school because he was born with a health problem that causes the inside of his body to grow but not the outside of his body.
Spider-Man was created in the 1960s and was created to help nerdy teenage boys feel good about themselves. “Spider-Man was a regular teenage boy until one day he got bit by a radioactive arachnid he did not die of radiation sickness but he acquires the strength and agility of a spider as well as an uncanny spider sense” (Knowles 139). Spider-Man has a lot in common with Gene from A Separate Peace by John Knowles. Gene is a nerdy teenage boy like Spider-Man’s alter ego Peter Parker. Spider-Man can be compared or contrasted to many other heroes such as king, Arthur, Sir Gawain and Beowulf.
Attributes of a hero have remained the same over time, which is shown through Greek heroes like Hercules demonstrating the same traits as modern heroes like Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman. One of the traits Hercules and Batman share is their passion for becoming a hero. The audience can see this characteristic during the “I Can Go The Distance” song when Hercules proclaims, “Somehow I'll be strong, I know every mile will be worth my while, I would go most anywhere to find where I belong.” Similarly, the audience can see Batman's passion each time he drops whatever he is doing, changes into his elaborate costume, and risks his life to save the city of Gotham from villains like The Joker and Bane. Life is full of doors, some are open and some are closed. There comes a time when sealed doors need to be broken open so everyone can reach their maximum potential and goals in life, just like Sherman Alexie did in “Superman and Me.” An example of Sherman Alexie breaking down doors is one of his quotes from “Superman and Me,” “this might be an interesting story all by itself. A little Indian boy teaches himself to read at an early age and advances quickly. He reads Grapes of Wrath in kindergarten when other children are struggling through Dick and Jane.
Character Analysis: Ruth The Invisible Hero demonstrates a range of characterisations in high school characters. From dictators to bystanders; one character demonstrates a personality twist. While interacting with others, Ruth’s characterisation develops from victim to hero.
In the story the joy of reading Superman and me Sherman Alexie tells an emotional story of both hardship and success. He shares his struggles of being a poor Indian kid destined to fail, but he had a desire to be persevere he wanted to be more than the stereotypical uneducated Indian on a reservation and was determined to do so. He was inspired by his father to love books, and with the love for books came the ability to escape from the boundaries of the reservation and the dream to be more. Alexie shares how he taught his self to read with a superman comic book and with his witty metaphors how it shaped his life. I found Alexis story to be emotional, but yet very interesting.
“The Untitled Superhero Poem” by Tonya Maria Matthews is a great example of stream of consciousness, displays great use of enjambment, and is an ideal representation of witness poetry. One of the first things that a reader will notice is that there is no punctuation in the poem until the very last line. The absence of punctuation, also known as enjambment, causes the reader to continuously read the poem without stopping. By using this device, Tonya Maria Matthews is forcing the reader to take in everything that is said in the poem at once. This device also gives high energy to “The Untitled Superhero Poem.”
Joseph Campbell noticed a recurring pattern that in myths from around the world, the most popular myths were the hero’s myth. The Hero’s myth identifies the different stages of a hero’s journey. The different stages in the journey include, the birth/beginning, the call to adventure, helpers/amulet, crossing the threshold, the tests, helpers, climax/supreme ordeal, flight, return, elixir, and home/end. The movie, Captain America: The First Avenger, Steve Rogers just an ordinary man who wants to join the army to help defeat the Germans in World War 2. Rogers registered for the army but failed, due to his health conditions.
From raging hormones to feelings of inadequacy, the teenage life is a mountain to overcome. This is especially true for a teenager who has superpowers. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, the protagonist is a fifteen-year-old teenager who wants to use his powers for the betterment of mankind, but he also has to play the role of boring Peter Parker. I will first explain how Spider-Man: Homecoming is a part of the teen movie genre, which will merge into several ideologies throughout the movie that are a common trope in the teen movie genre. For example, having a feeling that you are meant for something greater, asking a girl out to a dance, finding someone older to look up to, wanting desperately to fit in with the cool kids, and rebelling against authority.
In order for these heros to remain unknown to society they require a change of attire. Spiderman, of Marvel comics, is Peter Parker by day. An average high school student living in Queens, New York. He was bitten by a spider and miraculously developed spider-like super powers. Peter wanted to use his powers to fight the crime in queens but at the same time maintain his normal life.
Spider-Man faced off against two of the Phoenix Five to make sure the Avengers could get to safety and finish their rescue mission. He barely got out alive. This shows that he put his comrade’s safety above his own. If it wasn’t for Spider-man’s selflessness, the rescue mission would have probably failed and the Avenger’s lives would be in even more
The first quality of a hero, that spiderman has, is his physical and emotional strength. Spider Man has had a rough history and has lost some family members. Through these tragedies Spider Man has become emotionally stronger. Spider Man also has physical strength, which he had obtained by being bitten by a black widow spider.
