Malcolm X was one exciting movie that was based and co-produced on the autobiography of Malcolm. It is a 202-minute epic story that unfolded into the realities of the black man in America. This is one of the movies that Spike Lee produced, he is also credited for five other movies before this released (Clark, 2015). The film starring Denzel Washington was divided into three sections: in which the first part, Lee sought to explore X’s early life and childhood who was referred to as Malcom Little. The second phase was in jail where he transformed, reclaiming his Islamic beliefs and teachings. Denzel Washington in this role evolved into an activist, who fought for the black struggle. The film was one of the few to have ever reached that height having aired the views of the blacks. As a leader, his views clashed with those of the white even though he garnered support from other whites who joined his cause; it can be attributed to Lee’s perspective on the black struggle in America (Ebert, 1992). Unlike his father’s icons who believed in Marcus Garvey’s approach that the blacks belonged in Africa, X took a similar yet more refined and practical stance. Lee first had to endure a troubled start as the film had to reflect at the problems of telling black stories in the all-white-dominated Hollywood. Despite his dreams, the production took a different turn as issues in the production rose making it infeasible. First, the nation of Islam and its leader Louis Farrakhan made threats to Lee who at the time was aware of the sensitive nature of the film and Islam in general. He also had a few clashes with the Warner Brothers over the movie's budget and often referred to the studio as a ‘plantation’. Despite the black struggle depicted in the life of Malcom X, the director of the movie also had to endure a lot of tribulation in the making of this racially sensitive movie. From the film, he was taking home about $3 million, but due to the many financial complications, he was forced to use his own $2 million, to complete it after the production house failed to add any more capital into the project.
