In the documentary “13th” by director Ava DuVernay demonstrates how the African American community been repressed through the many years. It being named 13th after the 13th amendment which is that all Americans shall be granted freedom and this abolished slavery. The only loophole around this amendment is through imprisonment and that’s what unfortunately happens to the African American community. The documentary opens up by claiming that the United States are made up of 5% of the world population, but claiming 25% of the world prisonment. Sadly, mistaken that our Eurocentric country can be traced to repressing African Americans from the earlier times after the Civil War. African Americans were targeted and arrested over small crimes and be sent to jail and being at this jails they would be forced to do what our country wanted to them do. This is a loophole because even though the 13th amendment claimed their freedom, however, their freedom was striped long before the 13th amendment was passed. After the Civil War a film was produced that shown what occurred in the Civil War that was called “Birth of a Nation”. This film portrayed African Americans as criminals who were in danger to our society. This false conception lead people to treat African Americans even worse from what they been receiving even sparking the Ku Klux Klan and the group used a method of terrorism with the burning of the cross they occurred in the film itself. He was followed due to his suspicion when he was wearing a hoodie after coming back from a convenience store. His killer was George Zimmerman and after he shot and killed Trayvon he wasn’t sent to jail. He would later be trialed and later freed due to Florida’s State law of Stand Your Ground. This is a law that if you are threatened you have the right to kill a person over defense even though George Zimmerman persuaded Trayvon. This law was passed and written by ALEC. ALEC is a powerful group ran by an organization of politicians and corporations. Together this already can cause corruptions as these two groups can work together in their benefit in private organizations through profit and not by helping out the people. For example one corporation in ALEC is the Correction Corporations in America (CCA). This group owns private prisonment and does not have plans to aid people in rehabilitations while having their own agenda which is by benefitting themselves. This corporation made 1.7 billion dollars in profit as they earn money as they add people to their facility. ALEC would then pass a new law letting officers pull over any people who show signs that they are an immigrant. Immigrants would become targets into a facility that take immigrants that are young and old and won’t care for the own being leaving them to suffer
