A question that seems to dawn on the 21st century is the phrase of, “spiritual but not religious”. This phrase is permeating throughout the lives of Americans in the recent decades, as pointed out by Pew Research Center. When pose with this phrase one might ask, “what is spiritual, and what is religious, and are they both not correlated?” We attempt to provide a clear definition of these two subjects, and how they relate to the phrase based on the empirical data and research provided at hand. The eighty-one percent of the unaffiliated describe religion as, nothing in particular, and said they believe in God or a Universal Spirit. This counter argues our hypothesis because it shows that not all people who are SBNR believe in their inner-self, but in a higher power being. In America, Forty-two percent said they are neither religious nor spiritual, eighteen percent said they are religious, and thirty-seven percent said they are spiritual but not religious (Pew Research of 2012). It is a given that the religious unaffiliated ones tend to be less religious than Americans who belong to a religious tradition. In the Pew Research center surveys of 2012, the unaffiliated were less likely than general public as a whole to say that religion is important in their lives, such as attending worship regularly and praying every day. However, these people who say they are “spiritual but not religious” are honestly trying to understand what is not only spiritual but scientific as well (Frank 1). Furthermore, the article talks about details of spirituality in terms of neuroscience and the study of consciousness. This shows how people who are categorized as SBNR still have some sort of belief that involves science through potent experience. In order to analyze the phrase “religious but not spiritual”, we first set out to define what each of those term meant. According Pews Research center surveys of 2012, to be religious is to have a centralized belief in a certain doctrine or dogma of the supernatural. In our fifteen interviews, 20% of the interviewees (3/15) claimed that religion is a way to believe in God or a higher power.
