One of the most well-known cartoon shows of this time has been running for eighteen years, SpongeBob SquarePants. It’s been running for so long that we can see what it has taught children well into their teenage years, if they continued to watch it. Honestly, there are many adults that are fans of the show, myself included. The characters have portrayed the same demeanors for many years that we can certain distinguish the psychological means behind them. Two key characters that stand out are certain Mr. Krabs and Spongebob himself. I’ve gathered several clips that demonstrate the interesting findings from watching the show over the years. After watching this show for many years, there are two social psychology concepts that stuck out, the first being displaced aggression with Mr. Krabs. This discrimination can be seen from the very first episode of the show. In clip five from episode “Help Wanted”, Spongebob acts as any normal person, excited to apply for a job. It so happens that he has always dreamed of being a fry cook. Squidward sees him coming and tries to keep Mr. Krabs from hiring him. The two of them proceed to make their judgements on him. Mr. Krabs give him what seems to be an impossible task to do. They laugh at him as he runs off eager to please them. This shows how they were not willing to talk to him and see what his work ethics were truly like. Of course, trouble stirs up and Spongebob comes to the rescue of Squidward and Mr. Krabs. It seems that Spongebob has to perform twice as hard to prove that he is worth more than he seems.
