C&C Midterm- choose 2 questions 1. Looking at the relationship between Christianity and Culture, religion and science, religion and society, please explain using one author for each pairing. a. One of the best examples of the relationship between Christianity and culture is found in St. Paul’s First Letter of Corinthians. Paul begins this letter by saying the Church is divided in Corinth, but they should all be believers of Christ. He continues to state the problems the Church has encountered by the culture they live in. At the time in Corinth, there was a lot of sinners and the Church was being corrupted. St. Paul urges the Church to stay strong and to chase away evil by providing a moral example. He establishes certain guidelines for the people in the Church. For example, he says that men do not need to be circumcised and women should cover their head when praying in public. His guidelines would contribute to the culture at the time because Christians would follow them. Justin Martyr’s fight for justice inspired me in two ways. St. Justin intended to inspire his audience to fight for justice, particularly concerning the Christians and the Christian name. He recognizes the injustice and tries to correct it through his writings and teachings about justice and truth. However, St. Justin unintentionally inspired me to be myself and defend what I believe in. As a Christian during the Roman Empire, St. Justin had to constantly defend his beliefs in his Apology in a way that would not get him killed. He is the model of how we should argue our beliefs. He speaks respectfully, addressing the Emperor and his son with the proper titles. St. Justin is educated about his arguments and presents them logically.
