Stable Families During The Great Depression

Do you know how hard it was to maintain a stable family during the Great Depression? So many people had that idea of the American dream, which meant having the perfect family. In the U.S. so many families wanted the American dream, things were normal, women and men had their roles, things were cheap, everything was perfect. When the 1920s hit, that was when Americans all started thinking about the American dream and what it would be like living in it and having it. During the 1920s, appliances, cars, houses, were cheap. Many Americans could get jobs, make good money, and have stable families. When the Great Depression hit, when things went downhill, families were no longer stable, people didn’t have jobs, families were left with little to nothing.

Which was a new opportunity and confidence with a new set of expectations. The economy was recovering from the Great Depression and was back to booming. Families could afford things again, technology started to evolve, and the world was becoming more connected. According to Encyclopedia.com Editors, “By the mid-1940s, the country's economy was prospering; people could find jobs that paid well; families were growing; and people began buying things.” This quote explains how Americans started to seek new opportunities and started to have extra money to buy things that weren’t necessarily “necessities” like, cars, electric appliances, and other luxuries. Families can start to go on vacations and spend time in nice sunny locations. Families could now stably afford to have kids, so there were more families growing in size. While the economy was booming and technology was evolving, movies started to become more popular and evolving, and technology was starting to emerge. According to History.com Editors, “By 1971, ATMs were able to perform multiple functions, such as providing account balances and dispensing cash, and within the decade the machines would be common worldwide.” This quote indicates that with technology evolving and ATMs becoming widespread, it was providing people with easy access to purchase things with cash. With all the technology, it created more opportunities for Americans. Tech jobs, factories, and construction site jobs all saw a major increase. This portrays how the American dream evolved during the 1940s-2000s. The American dream revolved around new opportunities during this time period. Many Americans had a set of new expectations, but continued to take any opportunity they had and work to achieve their goals.
