The Great Depression The Great Depression was a devastating moment and difficult time for American citizens. It was a time of extreme crisis that the nation had never experienced before. This era affected many families and communities by stripping away all of their belongings and making them lose everything they had. People were desperate to find jobs that could support their families and feed them throughout the year. At this point, people were even dying of hunger and some even went crazy because their needs never were, or could be satisfied. They began to ask for their money back. The only way people could get their money back quickly was to sell some of their stocks, and they did. People sold so many stocks that eventually, the stock values went down and the stock market crashed. This led to the beginning of the Great Depression. The crash of the stock market was not the only thing that led to the Great Depression. Experts noticed economic problems throughout the 1920s and wealth was also unevenly divided among Americans. After the stock market crash (during the Great Depression) people started taking loans from the bank. Many people defaulted on their loans and could not pay back the bank. Thanks to this, thousands of banks closed between 1930 and 1933 and millions of people lost their money. It had to do with many things: banking, the stock market, industry, farming, public works, helping poor people, and conservation. Some of these programs were the TVA, the NRA, the NIRA, PWA, FDIC, SEC, etc. These programs, unlike Hoover’s plans, actually worked and helped American society. They helped the American economy go significantly up and provided the unemployed with jobs so they could win money. He also helped women, and African Americans get jobs with separate programs for each. Roosevelt helped this country so much that even today, many people still consider him the best president America has ever
