Research shows alcohol and drug abuse contributes to 1/3 of homelessness. In today's society, alcohol and drugs are very easy to buy or receive. This causes issues, especially for the already financially inadequate. They can become addicted and lose their money. Alcohol and drugs are very addictive, change the way the brain feels, and can become a way to cope, and they are one of the main reasons people turn out to be homeless. For example, people start abusing drugs and alcohol to cope with the pressures of homelessness. In the article "Substance Abuse and Homelessness", the author, Stacy Mosel, discusses why a person could start taking products (paragraph 2). "Many people begin using drugs or alcohol as a way of coping with the pressures of homelessness.". Experiencing homelessness is a vast mix of bad reactions like depression, and everyone has a way of coping with traumatic events. The author also gives research …show more content…

According to another article by americanaddictioncenter.org called "How do drugs and alcohol affect the brain", the authors (the editorial staff of the website), explain how your brain reacts to these products (par. 2) "Alcohol and drug use... can alter feelings, perceptions, thought processes, and behavior." Because these products become the highest source of dopamine, these changes in the brain cause addiction. One more quote strengthens the fact that substances cause addiction in the homeless (par. 2). 2) "Substance use can even change the brain in ways that contribute to addiction development." The misuse of drugs and alcohol can ruin someone and make them poor. This is why people who do products become homeless. Overall, as the brain finds another source of pleasure, addiction arises and people will spend additional money to fulfill their addictions.
