“Playwright Tennessee Williams was born on March 26, 1911-1983, in Columbus, Mississippi. After college, he moved to New Orleans, a city that would inspire much of his writing”(“Tennessee Williams”). “A Streetcar Named Desire written by Tennessee Williams is set in the French Quarter of New Orleans. The year is 1947 - the same year in which the play was written” (Bradford n.p.). In the play A Streetcar Named Desire, Stella’s sister, Blanche, moves in with her. Stanley Kowalski controls his wife Stella in the play in many different ways. One way this can be scene is when Stanley yells at his wife to sit down and she does as she is told. “Set down! I've got th' dope on your big sister, Stella” ( Williams 105). As soon as Stanley yells at Stella does as told. Another major part is when Blanche is saying how mean and rude Stanley is after the part when Stanley hugs Stella he can be seen smiling at Blanche because he knows he controls her. Stanley also hate being told what to do in his own house because he want to control his home like its his castle, “Every Man is a King!" And I am the king around here, so don't forget it!” (Williams 116). Stanley also thing that woman can’t control the household. When Stanley say he is king it is pretty clear the he doesn’t like being told what to do in his own house especially by a female, “when Stella tells Stanley to clear his part of the table he yells at his wife Stella, when do you give me orders around here” (Koprince 51). Stanley hates being told what to do in his own house. Some can also say that when Stanley hits Stella he wants he to to who is boss, “Stanley macho need for control leads him to abuse to stella…” (Koprince 51). It can also be argued that Stella kinda controls Stanley in a way because when Stanley hits Stella he immediately calls her back because he doesn’t want to lose her. Also during the bowling part in the play we can see the Stanley also controls his friends, “...No, I don't wanta bowl at Riley's. I had a little trouble with Riley last week. I'm the team-captain, ain't I? All right, then, we're not gonna bowl at Riley's, we're gonna bowl at the West Side or the Gala! All right, Mac. See you!” (Williams 119). Even tho Stanley’s friends want to bowl at “Riley’s” it doesn’t matter because Stanley wants to bowl somewhere else. Altho this is just
