What if scientist showed facts and information supporting we could start school later and improve our academics and stay healthy while doing it ? Starting early is not as good or as safe as people think it is for young teens or High School students . It’s something that has been researched and looked at many times , but it still seems to be an issue in the U,S with schools having a later start time. This can be an issue in many different ways , but it’s also something that won’t change overnight . School starting too early has many different effects on students such as REM(rapid eye movement) when teens lose sleep and this causes them to not be able to control their moods , and also can cause obesity , drug abuse , and depression and dropout …show more content…
Teens spend a great portion of each day in school; however, they are unable to maximize the learning opportunities afforded by the education system, since sleep deprivation impairs their ability to be alert, pay attention, solve problems, cope with stress and retain information. Young people who do not get enough sleep night after night carry a significant risk for drowsy driving and emotional and behavioral problems such as irritability, depression poor impulse control and violence; health complaints; tobacco and alcohol use; impaired cognitive function and decision-making , and lower overall performance in everything from academics to athletics. Hectic schedules with afterschool activities and jobs, homework hours and family obligations, and a clash between societal demands, such as early school start times , and biological changes that put most teens on a later sleep-wake clock. As a result, when it is time to wake up for school, the adolescent’s body says it is still the middle of the night, and he or she has had too little sleep to feel rested and alert. I believe there are pros and cons to starting school at later times , but I think it would help and increase the academics and health in high school students to get more sleep and have a later start time to at least give it a try and compare the differences in start times after a while and see the differences in academics and moods and go by what’s working best for students and allowing them to get the education they need , while getting enough sleep and not harming their bodies
