The State of Affairs To begin with, I view the current state of affairs in the town as political exploitation. There are two issues that need to be clearly disconnected, firefighting service delivery and political expediency. From the case presented, the mayor is seeking his fifth term by trying please the electorate. The legislation process needs to be disconnected from personal feuds. The firefighting service is a core requirement in any society. The mayor's office needs to support the department instead of opposing it. The other factor that is evident in the dilemma presented is that of negative public relationship towards the fire service department. The danger is that at times the criticism from the media may not be based on facts. The consequence of negative reporting by the media is that the issues may be blown out of proportion hence the negative of the populace towards the Fire Department. My second position in this matter is that the Fire Department needs to deal with the issue of employee integrity. Drug abuse and drunkenness are behavioral and integrity issues that can be dealt with using appropriate disciplinary measures. The human resource and recruitment department ought to ensure that they attract the right employee skills to avoid bad reputation to the firms that result from negative publicity. The fire department ought to know how to handle politics. The very survival of the fire department is affected by day to day politics of the society. Politics can interfere with the service delivery of the fire department. In such a case, it is the public whose lives are put at risk. The blanket accusation towards the fire department as ‘doing nothing’ is dishonest and not based on facts. The managers of the fire department need to come out and defend the hardworking men and women who risk their lives to ensure that the public and their property are protected and rescued in the event that a fire emergency occurs. There is a stark difference between firefighting and politics. A politician just needs to be of the right age and have the people’s backing to run for an office. The fire department’s workforce, on the other hand, need to possess certain qualifications as a bare minimum before joining this noble profession.
