Analysis: President Trump 's State of the Union Address President Donald J Trump’s first State of the Union address is filled with great rhetorical devices which allow him to reach his audience and achieve his purpose. Trump’s use of these rhetorical devices in his speech appeal to pathos, ethos and logos. With rhetorical devices like repetition and anecdotes plus his use of phenomenal diction , President Trump inspires patriotism and unity, and makes people feel safe and ultimately, he lets them know that he and his administration are and will serve the people and will support them. President Trump’s speech had many patriotic moments; some which even got people to shout in unity “USA, USA”. One big area would be the economy and trade, which Trump addresses with logos using statistics and inspiring diction. “We will work to fix bad trade deals and negotiate new ones. And we will protect America intellectual property, through strong enforcement of our trade rules.” Another area, he addresses is the infrastructure which he describes using the metaphor “crumbling infrastructure”. Trump’s use of the word “crumbling“ makes people see the severity of the issue and by saying, ” I am calling on the Congress to produce a bill that generates at least $1.5 trillion for the new infrastructure investment we need.” he is proposing a solution to the issue, one which will benefit all. Trump’s usage of ethos also contributes to his speech, “We want every American to know the dignity of a hard day’s work. We want every child to be safe in their home at night.
