First and foremost, thank you for giving me the opportunity to follow my dreams worry-free. It has been a tremendous blessing to not only me but my family as well. After receiving the congratulatory email from the foundation, I began planning my goals for the semester. I arrived at UT with the intention to exceed academically, molding my craft as a journalist. I made plans to join various organizations that would only benefit me career-wise, one being the National Association of Black Journalists. Within a month of being on campus, my life took a toll for the worst; my grandmother passed away on September 26. Before she passed, she was diagnosed with pneumonia. I desired to expand my journalistic skills, and I added another major, Communication and Leadership. I started the semester working for The Daily Texan in the Podcast department, where I recorded stories about the ongoings of campus life. The podcast allowed me to get experience in a department that I’ve never done before, and I am truly grateful for it, but I wanted to make my mark as a leader on the campus as well. So, I applied for ProjectLEAD and the Student Executive Foundation Board. With great determination, I am now a team member of ProjectLEAD for the next school year and the Vice President of Marketing for the Foundation Board. I hope to be extremely successful and impactful in my leadership organizations. I would also like to continue my work with The Daily Texan. The most important for academics is maintaining a high GPA while getting the most out of my education. I aspire to be a broadcast journalist, so I look forward to learning as much as I can. Non-academically, I aspire to be closer to my family than the day before. Family is the most important aspect of my life, and right now we are a risk of losing my father to congestive heart failure. So, cherishing our time together is what is most important. With my family, I have a lot going on, so I hope to be more active about seeking counseling for the next school, so I can handle my issues a bit better and get a tighter grip on my goals. I would also like to get a head start on my options to study abroad during this next school year. But it goes without saying that none of this would be possible if weren’t for the Terry Foundation’s sincere vote of confidence in me.
