Stephen King, a Truly Great American Author By Sophie Callaway
A prolific American writer, Stephen King, has impacted at least three generations of readers with his novels of horror and fantasy. King’s ability to connect with his readers comes from his attention of current events, popular fears, and the honestly of his characters. As an author, King seems to understand the way his characters think and reason. Whether he is narrating as a high school prom queen, a teenage boy, a mad dog, or an inanimate object, King aptly delivers a variety of true and vital character for his multitudes of demanding fans.

Shortly after this coup King’s mother passed away and he moved to Boulder Colorado where he was influenced into writing The Shining, a story about a family influenced by an evil spirit. During this stint King published multiple other stories including The Stand and The Dead Zone which were both based in Colorado. In 1977, both Tabitha and Stephen returned to Bangor, Maine and bought a home so that Stephen could teach at the University of Maine Orono. There are also many scholarship funds the two have set aside for promising high school students. Stephen has been noted to say that “Talent is cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work.” This is probably why King continues to write and practice for 4-6 hours a day, writing at least 2,000 words. King’s own opinion of himself seems to be based in humility. Even though he says he works hard he is somewhat self critical, “I am the literary equivalent of a Big Mac and fries.” King’s blaze of glory has not always burned so brightly. Following the publication of Cujo the author suffered terribly from a drug and alcohol addiction. A family intervention got him the help he needed and set King back on course. In 1999 King was hit by a distracted driver and spent months recovering. This provided a new perspective and greater appreciation for life and health. At first many feared King would stop writing completely, but he does still continue to do so, just at a slightly slower pace. When he is not writing, King is a music enthusiast. He even sometimes will play his guitar and sing in a band called the “Rock Bottom Remainders” that includes some of his fellow companions and great literary writes, Dave Berry and Amy Tan.
