Representative Kevin McCarthy is one of fifteen Republican members in Congress in the state of California, which is highly outnumbered by thirty-eight democrats. After four years of getting reelected as the representative for the 22nd district in California, redistricting retitled it the 23rd district. The newly numbered district became more compact, losing the central coast while adding a chunk of Tulare County. This did not change the fact that McCarthy’s district was still heavily Republican. The redistricting of 2012 in California showcased a new way to redistrict as the citizens of California chose the district lines, providing one of the most competitive elections in the country.
In 1954, McCarthy turned his attention from the federal government towards exposing the supposed communist infiltration of the armed services. McCarthy launched his “Army-McCarthy Hearings,” but these hearings were different, they were broadcast on national television from April to June. Hearing after hearing, McCarthy invulnerability reputation began to disappear. First, the army services had undermined the Senators credibility by “showing evidence that [McCarthy] had tried to win preferential treatment for his aides when they were drafted” (“Army-McCarthy Hearings”). Then, the public came to notice that McCarthy used aggressive measure to interrogate witnesses, especially when he was interrogating a young Army Lawyer.
McCarthy was the United States senator at the time, and was also the person most associated with the anticommunist crusade. McCarthy made it to where many Americans were afraid to even question him. “He leveled charges of disloyalty at celebrities, intellectuals and anyone who disagreed with his political views, costing many of his victims their reputations and jobs. McCarthy’s reign of terror continued until his colleagues formally denounced his tactics in 1954.” (The Red Menace) McCarthy used the McCarthyism method.
This primary source edited by Jesse G. Cunningham and Laura K. Egendorf is a series of articles written by eyewitnesses who were called to testify in some relation to the McCarthy Trials or other court cases. The book goes into great depth to analyze McCarthy’s methods and to assess McCarthy and McCarthyism. This source was fantastic for providing more than enough eyewitness testimonies and first hand insight to the trauma caused by McCarthy in the government and society. This source added the project because it highlighted McCarthy’s tactics and gave direct insite to the court cases that went on during that time period.
“Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?” was said by Joseph Welch an attorney from Boston during the Army-McCarthy hearing in 1954. The Army- McCarthy hearing lasted for two months and McCarthy accused the United States Army for harboring communists since they refused tor give his consultant David Schine a special assignment. On June 9th of the trials McCarthy confronted army counsel Jeremy Welch by bringing up that Fred Fisher an attorney part of Welch’s law firm was part of a group with communist party associations. In response to McCarthy manipulation Mr. Welch delivered the famous words “Let us not assassinate this lad further, Senator.
President Harry Truman signed the Executive Order 9835, the document established a loyalty program, designed to eliminate communist influence in the United States. According to this order, citizens entering employment would undergo a loyalty investigation to further prove loyalties to the Nation and disprove communist ties. Joseph McCarthy soon jumped on this idea of a loyalty program and took it a step further. Soon after the rise of McCarthy, Henry Steele Commager arose; he was not a fan of the loyalty order or the push for anti-communist beliefs. Joseph R. McCarthy was a U.S. senator who believed that there were a vast number of communists working for the State Department.
On August 6, 1945, the first of two atomic bombs was dropped on Japan, sparking the start of what is now known as the Cold War. Two large military powers, the Soviet communists and the United States of America, pitted their wits and defense against each other, using any means necessary to find cracks in the others’ defenses. Rod Serling, by creating the episode “The Monsters are Due on Maple Street”, Serling is trying to show an aspect of history like McCarthyism. During the episode, a lot is going on and it causes the residents to lose their sanity. The problem starts off small, and soon the whole situation is flipped from being about a power outage to blaming each other about who caused it. Lastly, the end of the show is total chaos. Much like McCarthyism which is making accusations to transform the established social order and treason without regards to evidence, the show represents that in a way that’s subtle.
Mass hysteria was present in both The Crucible and McCarthyism. Mass hysteria is when people went crazy because people were accused of being communists and or witches. Mass hysteria was however started by specific people in both scenarios. In Mccarthyism Joseph Mccarthy a United States Senator and in The Crucible Abigail Williams who was accused of having an affair with John Proctor her employer were the specific ones who accused people of being communists and witches. Even though the Salem witch trials happened in the late 1690s and McCarthyism in the 1950s they paralleled each other.
Guilty Even if Not Because of false accusations, many lives have been demolished throughout history. A play written by Arthur Miller,The Crucible, where a group of girls got accused of witchcraft moreover, they were faking it in order to act up as well as accuse people they disliked turning it into a long time wasting uproar, which getting people killed for loathing that person. McCarthyism is when McCarthy starts accusing people of communism for his sake. People made accusations of subversion or treason without proper regard for evidence. Arthur Miller used The Crucible as a criticism of Senator Joseph McCarthy and his actions by comparing being accused of witchcraft and not confessing to witchcraft from the play to being accused of communism
The Democratic Party has been diverging and I, Eugene McCarthy, have been very vocal in regards to the upcoming election of 1968. Some background on myself is that I graduated from University of Minnesota obtaining my masters and later went on to serve in WWII. I then worked at the College of St. Thomas as a chairman in sociology before entering the political arena. In 1948 I was elected into the Minnesota House of Representatives and then elected into the Senate in 1958. Throughout these past twenty years, I have been able to gain more experience politically and refine my more liberal views.
Period4 The Crucible Essay Communism and Witchcraft have the same effect on humans, that effect is fear, when you hear fear you think of your worst nightmare or someone hiding in your closet, during the McCarthyism era and the salem witchcraft people had fear about whether their life is on the line or not. It all depended on one person in their community whether or not they choose to save their life. The Crucible by Arthur Miller is an allegory for the Red Scare in the McCarthy era because the girls feared Abigail just like everyone feared J.McCarthy, Elizabeth being accused is similar to McCarthy accusing the US Army, they are innocent just like Elizabeth.

The Crucible by Arthur Miller is based on the true events of the Salem witch trials. Set in the 17th century The Crucible told the story of a town that ensued a hunt for witches, caused by the accusations of Salem 's young girls and their ring leader Abigail Williams. Arthur Miller wrote this play to symbolize 1950’s McCarthyism. Most readers are unfamiliar with McCarthyism. So for a brief explanation, McCarthyism was carried out under senator Joseph McCarthy during 1950-1954 against alleged communist in the US government and in other institutions.
