The Seven Deadly Sins & the “Masque of the Red Death” The “Masque of the Red Death” is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe, published in 1842. There are various underlying messages within the story. The question is, did Edgar Allan Poe imply the similarities of the Seven Deadly Sins, in his short novelty “Masque of the Red Death”? It is stated that Poe, dislikes didacticism and allegory, but believed literature should have an undercurrent under the story, to be a proper literature piece.
Annotated Bibliography Introduction: Examine different kinds of advertisements and the problem at hand with how they perpetuate stereotypes, such as; gender, race, and religion. Thesis: The problem in society today is in the industry of social media. In efforts to attract the eye of the general population, advertising companies create billboards, commercials, flyers and other ads with stereotypes that are accepted in today’s society. Because of the nations’ cultural expectation for all different types of people, advertisement businesses follow and portray exactly what and how each specific gender, race, or religion should be.
The reason being, stereotypes. A stereotype is a specific image or idea about a particular person or group. Psychology today discusses “ In their explicit use, stereotypes serve as a set of clear and open biased beliefs that people consciously use as part of their thoughts, decisions and social actions.” People think of stereotypes without even knowing that they may be stereotyping a certain person or group of people because it has become a natural thing. The question that is left unanswered is if people were aware that they are stereotyping unconsciously would they change the way in which they thought.
In the article “Self-Fulfilling Stereotypes” by Mark Snyder, the various researchers help construct evidence of stereotypes in our society. Theses stereotypes affect both men and women as well as various racial stereotypes. For example, Snyder mentions that college students of the opposites sex were to have a phone conversation with one another. Each of the men were given a picture of the women they were supposedly talking to. When some of the men received a photo of an unattractive female, they predicted they would be awkward, unsociable, and boring (Snyder 543).

Imagine being perceived in a way were almost everyone thought one lived a catastrophic life based on the school they went to. A stereotype is an image of a person or group of people that is labeled or seen in a specific way by a range of people. Although stereotypes come with some legitimacy, another way groups and individuals are judged or viewed differently is by misconceptions. False interpretations forming from misunderstood ideas or thoughts are misconceptions. Stereotypes have come from past generations which are now influenced from media such as movies, tv shows, and social networks.
Over the past week, I was tasked to choose between one of two articles that all of the incoming freshman at Union County College in preparation for the up and coming school year. This decision will forever change the way the incoming students will do before stereotyping a certain race, religion, or sexual preference. One of the articles I had to choose from was called, “Don’t Let Stereotypes Warp Your Judgments” By Robert L. Heilbroner, while the other one was called, “Black Men and Public Space” by Brent Staples. What we do today will determine who we are tomorrow. How society portrays us will define us towards everyone else, except our true selves. We live in a world where, if you don’t graduate from high school you fall under the label stupid. Where, if you are pregnant at 16 you fall under the label of a girl who couldn’t keep her legs closed. Where, if you graduate and have a career and travel the world and go above and beyond you are considered a smart, rich, and successful person.
Racism is an ongoing global issue that has oppressed many 'minorities ' for years now. More specifically, up until 1964, the 'African-American ' community of the United States of America were segregated, degraded and treated as second class citizens compared to their white counterparts. Some people would even argue that now, even though all citizens have the same legal rights, societally, black people are not viewed as equal to their white neighbours. Today, black people are still victims of hate crimes, they are still oppressed and are treated substandard to everyone else. Black people are often still falling victim to biased stereotypes and negative stigma.
As a therapist, to alleviate diversity issues or conflicts I must remember and remind members not to stereotype. Since this success of this group is highly depends on self-disclosure, I must be culturally sensitive to issues of self-disclosure. Some cultures view this as a form of weakness or betrayal while others encourage or abuse it. I must be mindful of my own biases, personal beliefs and ethical boundaries. In the first session, I must ask members how they identified and through activities I can help members accept and appreciate differences in others, model appropriate terminology when discussing diversity issues, encourage members to explore their own biases and prejudices.
Prejudice Prejudice is another form of bias that is present within group dynamics. It is a baseless, unjustified attitude, usually negative attitude toward an individual based solely on the individual’s membership of a social group. Common features of prejudice include negative feelings, stereotyped beliefs, and a tendency to discriminate against members of the group (Cherry, 2014). According to psychologist, Gordon Allport, prejudice and stereotypes emerge in part as a result of normal human thinking.

Imagine a world where African Americans are completely discriminated and have no rights just because of their skin color. They would be seen as nothing to the people 's eyes, nothing but useless pieces of meat. This would probably happen if people didn’t stand up for what they believe in. But we do not live in a world where African Americans are completely discriminated. We live in a world where people can stand up for what they believe and make a change for the better.
Opinions are a delicate matter, and can change in the matter of seconds. They provide us with a perspective on an issue, thereby enable us to choose one side over another. They are effective representations of one’s beliefs and perceptions. For this reason, they can never be facts. Opinions are subjective, and will always have a large degree of error.
Stereotyping is a way of categorizing certain groups of people or types of individuals with regards to gender, race, culture, religion etc. Stereotyping arises from prior assumptions due to influences by the media, history and personal experience. The statement: “To gain an understanding of the world we need to make use of stereotypes,” appears that stereotyping is required in order to really understand the world, and knowledge issues can be drawn from this statement: Does stereotyping prevent us from knowing someone truly and how are stereotypes created in the first place? One way to examine and discuss the knowledge issues is to look at different areas of knowledge, which in our case will be History and Human Science.
