In today’s society, to what extent does dehumanization occur? In the Michael Bay’s dystopian movie, The Island, Lincoln Six Echo and Jordan Two Delta are contained in an isolated environment, governed by stern rules. All the people living in the island believe that the outside world is contaminated and there is only one island left that is safe for them. Each week, the controllers hold a lottery and one of the occupants are allowed to live on the island. After speculation about the island from finding a live moth, Lincoln Six Echo discovers that the winners of the lottery are used to harvest their organs or become surrogates for mothers in the outside world.
In the book “You May Ask Yourself”, they define gender roles as “sets of behavioral norms assumed to accompany one’s status as male or female” (Conley Dalton). Gender roles are a very controversial matter. When people think of males, they automatically think of strong, brave, and the breadwinner. On the other hand, when people think of females they think delicate, housewife, and sensitive. I guarantee that most people in the world have this idea of each gender.
A gender role is defined as a set of social norms dictating what types of behaviors are generally considered acceptable, appropriate, or desirable for a person based on their actual or perceived sex (gender role). Gender roles have been present throughout all of history and it has varied significantly. At the moment of birth, we as humans are assigned gender roles. People learn from those who are around them. In society masculine roles are traditionally associated with strength and dominance, while feminine roles are traditionally associated with nurturing and subordination.

The behavior of individuals is socially enforced by norms within a society. Gender roles are conditioned by household structure and other factors such as access to resources. Movies like Mulan and Pocahontas convey a female heroine that many children will look up to as role models.

Every culture has certain roles both genders are expected to follow. An example of this in traditional American culture is a man becoming a doctor while a female becomes a nurse or men being the hard workers and women being stay at home mothers. Gender development researchers, similar to other developmental researchers, focus on questions of change over time in gender related subjects (Ruble and Martin 1988). Research suggest that children are socialized to understand gender stereotypes at an early age.
